Thomas has announced he is staying at North Melbourne, at least for now.

My guess (and it is purely a guess) is that Thomas and his manager were seeking a long term deal from a club at money equivalent to what he is currently on. It was reported that the Swans enquired about him last year but were put off by the healthy size of his contract - estimated (by someone, not sure who) to be around $700k pa. That sounds like a player reaping the early rewards of potential at a club with not many places to spend its salary cap. His best is superb but he has produced it sporadically.

Add in the off-field issues, and no club (including North) in their right mind would give him a long-term, highly paid contract. When he and his manager realised this, I suspect they came to the conclusion that his best bet was to see out his contract next year and then find out if any club (including North) is of the mind to give him that long term deal. Even if his off-field is exemplary for the next 12 months, I think he will remain a perceived risk. Not only for the off-field potential hazards but a question over whether he will apply himself onfield to his best ability if he has the security of a long-term, lucrative contract.

Say what you like about Collingwood, but at least they are honest enough to trade players as needed to keep within the salary cap, unlike certain other clubs.

If Ginnivan satisfies the no-dheads rule then by all means he should be considered. I didn't like him at first, but he has matured as a player. Imagine him and Papley in the same forward line.

I would hate to see him at our club. Doubt he fits the clubs 'no dickhead' policy.....plus I have a personal prejudice against the name Ginnivan after my experiences playing against his father and uncle back in the 80's in the MCDFL.....but that's just me.

Seriously though, he would have to pull his really big head in if he was to play for the Swans.

I don't doubt we could make him do that though should the unlikely happen and he came to our club.

I was so against this when it was raised previously as I think hes a nob but seeing how much of a cult star he is for the Pies and how much they love him it would be fun taking them from him.

In saying that I think hes a pretty passionate Pies guy and I dont know if we have a shortage of small/med forwards?

I reckon that's not a bad deal for either side ...

On Stephens, he's had a lot of opportunity and hasn't looked up to it, which is a big shame. I think he's out the door and really hope that he doesn't "do an Aliir" at North. We won't get much for him sadly.

Under the proposal you quoted he’s be going to North (where Thomas is currently), not Hawthorn. The Hawthorn reference was to their early second round pick that we hold.

But that trade’s not going to happen, regardless.

One scenario might be :

So pick 11 we will most likely go the draft with?

Picks 41 and 49 could we bundle to their value of pick 27ish if a team needs the points for father son or academy ?

So we end up with picks 11, 22, 27, 30

We use 27 and 30 for trades if required or we bundle 27 and 30 into their value which is pick 12ish

We could end up with 11and 12 for the draft and maybe pick 22 is required for a specific role trade we have identified ?

This is all depends on who needs points and flexibility with multiple picks and also if we can get what we want via UFA or FA etc

11 and 12 would have many options to go back to back with talent in the draft and probably get what we want………. and or bundle again to move into serious players ie 11 & 12 bundled equals pick 2 which no one will give up as a straight trade …. But there is opportunity
