Think he suffered a significant head knock at training a few years back plus another in a game around the same time. He does leave himself open at times. Onr of the reasons he was put in the backline where he has excelled. He was a very promising forward as well.

Unfortunately head injuries are now the most serious in our game and the AFL needs to send a very strong message to players but in a contact sport it always remains a possibility. Can wearing a helmet help to mitigate serious injury?
Helmets can prevent or reduce serious injury, but do not prevent concussion.

Concussion is from the brain moving back and forth suddenly or smashing against the skull wall in reaction to an impact to the head/neck. A padded helmet is not going to stop the brain being jolted or thrown against the skull wall. Probably wore a padded helmet for a while with the Saints, but he doesn't now, because it won't help with concussion.

One of the really sad parts of concussions and CTE is that you can't diagnose the latter until an after death tissue analysis of the brain, though you can suspect it has occurred if there is some shrinkage of the frontal lobes.

Thank you Mal for clearing that up. Feel so sorry for Paddy- what’s best for him now? The incident looked so innocuous at first, I couldn’t believe he was in trouble! The good news is that he seemed quite ok sitting on the bench afterwards but pretty sad, as can be imagined. No doubt he will be under observation for a while and if the medicos should give him the all clear down the track, it should be up to him if he continues. However if this proves to be the end, we will forever be grateful for the wonderful season he gave us last year!

Wish you all the best Paddy!

I also want to wish Jeremy Finlayson’s wife a full recovery- always liked Finlayson as a player and he won the game for Port???? Should have come to us!

Re Paddy, it is up to him to decide. Every thing in life has some risks, but as he has had concussions before, he is at higher risk of more concussions, and each one including on Sunday is doing invisible and immeasurable damage to his brain. The last one could have added 0.01% more damage or another 10% in the long run, but there is no way to measure or track it. Simply each concussion is very likely to make things worse but we don’t know by how much.

As for Kellie Findlayson, it sucks big time. I also have stage four lung cancer, but I have it from metastasised kidney cancer rather than colon cancer. Found out about the spread last October.

It is terminal as there is no cure once it has spread to your lungs. My tumours are small at the moment so I have hopefully quite a few years and at least one more Swans flag left in me. I’m not a drinker or smoker, just bad luck and a @@@@ sandwich that I have to eat one bite at a time.

I’m 51 so have had a lot more years than Kellie, but I feel for her and her family. My kids (all teenagers) don’t know yet as I am waiting like Kellie to hear a more definitive timeframe.

So sorry to hear of your cancer illness (and also Kellie Findlayson). I wish you have lots of years ahead of you and hopefully you will see multiple Swans flags.

I feel that we are going to have a lot of vacancies on our list at year's end. Franklin, Reid, Melican, Paddy (I'd imagine), Cunningham, Gould, Rankin (?), Wicks (?).

I am so sorry to hear that. Thank you very much for sharing such incredibly personal news. It certainly puts in perspective a lot of the things we get wound up about on this site. I wish you all the best for the fight ahead.

AA was made to look alot more formidable due to a woeful game from buddy. Our list is amazing, what is failing isna decent coach. Until we sort that, mediocre is all we can expect.

We opted for Roberts, Sheldrick, Konstanty, Vickery last two drafts? These players would not feature in the Pies, Cats nor Bears teams in 2023 vs the players they traded in who are all playing right now. Contributing right now to their top4 GF aspirations.

Also $700k not appropriately allocated for 2023? This is significant amount of money !!!

Was there a serious opportunity cost?

I haven't seen so much anger on the forum after a footy game. Alot of frustration at players after the Port loss?

For me no Jonas and no AA would have had Port losing by minimum 6 goals. The loss of our key tall defenders minimised our ability to control the game. Impossible almost. One kick in it was remarkable.

Has our 20233 strategy of not trading in another 40 to 50 goal forward weakened our opportunity for another GF chance in 2023?

The Cats and Pies and Bears went into hyperdrive for their window 2023 recruitment.

We are also in a window which is so hard to achieve and should always be tweaked to maximise probability of success which others have done admirably.

I’ve been following a Melbourne based biotech research firm called Prescient Therapeutics who are conducting groundbreaking work in cancer treatments. Though in early clinical trials at this stage, they have received recognition from the FDA and are leading the world in CAR-T technology which promises to become a major form of treatment and possible future cure for cancer.

Please check their website as it will give you a pretty good idea, and you can also contact the Company fo more info.. And ask your doctors to follow up as well! It really looks very promising????

Wishing you fortitude and love, Maltopia. Sad news. I echo the sentiments of others that I hope you get to see a few flags yet and generally enjoy your remaining years! Ditto for the rest of us.

Also tricky how to tell the kids. Personally, I think sooner rather than later. I offer that opinion only in case it's helpful to you - apologies for intruding if it isn't. I am a parent, and I had my dad die of cancer, and my sister survive pancreatic cancer - but I don't think any of that really qualifies me to give an opinion much more than anyone else.

My thoughts also with the McCartin family. What a horror week for them. I won't offer any opinions about what they should do but I hope that once they make their choices they can embrace them and live with them equanimously.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Just looking through the list of free agents as well as those coming out of contract with other clubs at the end of this year. I see no one on either list that would qualify as the "big fish" people keep raving on about who the Swans are supposedly in the market for. De Konig from Carlton would be the best of them but hardly a big fish in the sense of the Budwah or the Pluggermeister, or even the Hallster. A big fish in terms of size would be Charlie Dixon but he's getting pretty long in the tooth but would fit the bill as a well known, big bustling, forward presence. Maybe Kinnear and Horse have a bloke lined up who is in contract but will DEMAND a trade to the Swans.
