2023 List Management

I've had another skim through players taken in the mid-season drafts. Other than Ash Johnson, who I identified in a previous post, the only tall player I could find who has become an established AFL player is Ryan Gardner, who has played 45 games with the Bulldogs since being taken in the 2019 mid-season draft, including 22 last year. He had recently been delisted from Geelong, where he spent three years on the list without playing a game.
There are a handful of ruckmen in the AFL incubation system: Teakle who has played a few games for Port, Ned Moyle at the Suns who has other clubs sniffing around him, and, of course, our very own McAndrew.
Cooper Sharman burst onto the scene at the Saints as a smaller key forward, kicking ten goals from five games. But he only managed two goals from ten games in 2022 (he played down back in many of those) and seems out of favour now, having played just two games this season even while the Saints have been hit hard by injury, especially to their tall forwards. I suspect he'll struggle to stay on the list beyond this year.
Even amongst smaller players, there are very few who have really established themselves in their teams. (I mentioned Pickett and Noble in my previous post on the subject.)Comment

Pre-season supplementary period signing.
I haven't gone to survey the results, but I suspect the hit rate is a bit better in the pre-season supplementary period. Clubs have had a chance to reflect on their lists post national/rookie draft and see what's left. They get to talk with players and invite them to train for a week or two. The cream of what is left is then skimmed off, so it's not surprising that there's rarely much left for the mid-season draft.Comment

West Coast seem to have pick 1 in the bag after Hawthorn thumped them. If they end with pick 1, they are likely to split it. GWS and North may do deals.
The bad news: we hold Hawthorn's second-round and third-round picks which have declined a bit in value."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

At the start of the year, I thought Hawthorn and West Coast would fight it out for the Harley Reid Cup. But it won’t be a contest, and allowing for an injury list that is putrid compared even to us, there’s something wrong there.
As for splitting no1. No way, they’d be mad to anyway. Reid will make Daicos and Ashcroft look like punks. I get Norf did it last year, but apparently they rated Sheezel no1 (after Ashcroft), so they got him anyway, and the bonus of Wardlaw.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

I know I'm hindsight drafting but in more disturbing news, after the Sheldrick the pick before Van Rooyen in 2021 -
We now have Weddle looking the goods, taken with the pick 18 we swapped with Hawks in 2022 for Cooper Vickery, Hawks 2023 second and third rounders. Just sayin'Comment

Inactive list indicates a second midseason draft pick (and possibly a third, depending on Paddy's situation). And given who it is, and question marks over Hickey's fitness/durability, it throws up a possibility that we might be the club that pulls Naismith back into the AFL system.Comment
