      SYDNEY SWANS

The Swans do appear to have a fair bit on their plate already amid links to Harry Himmelberg and Tom Doning, and such names would likely be the priorities come the trade and free agency period. But Sydney’s ruck situation is precarious, with Tom Hickey in the twilight of his career and Peter Ladhams struggling to have a significant impact since crossing from the Power. Grundy could therefore be the ideal pick-up to help the Swans bounce back from a disappointing 2023 and massive fall from grace from their 2022 Grand Final season. Sydney’s midfield has really struggled this year — particularly against the top sides — getting well beaten by Melbourne (-34), Adelaide (-9), Geelong (-20), Collingwood (-9), Fremantle (-15), Brisbane (-29), Richmond (-9), and most recently, the Western Bulldogs (-21). Grundy’s inside game and contest has largely been his greatest strength over his 11-year career, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Sydney made a play for the big man.

Strange that we’ve already lost the clearance count to Adelaide, given we’re yet to play them. (I’m guessing those figures are clearance numbers - unless I’m going blind it doesn’t say what they are). But we probably will in a few weeks time.

I’d be more excited about landing a top line ruck than paying through the nose for a key defender. Or at least the key defenders seemingly available and their likely cost.

Numbers without units and incorrect teams, just another day in AFL media statistical analysis then

Going by AFL Tables the numbers are contested possessions, and the -9 should be Port Adelaide of course.

Yeah, I did figure they were referring to Port.

I don’t think contested possessions is a valid measure of ruck worth, given all the sorts of things that are included in the contested possession count.

              Me too Liz

My concern is potentially loosing Bud, PMac, Reid and Hickey for 2024 ie 4 significant talls, with a young squad and definitely we should be knocking on the door again if we recruit smart for 2024. No reason why we can’t make that happen.

Geese they put a man on the moon in 1969 !!!!

It is a tremendous amount of experience and skill to replace ……and replace very well with out breaking the bank

Heaths brother Brody could be a good value option.

Ben Mackay free agent 2024 also could be a smart option - I mean key backs who can intercept like he does are so hard to find for clubs.

How accurate is that list, given that Rampe, who just extended his contract to 2025, is on it?

I mean after last year and not opting to use pick No.18, but preferring to it to the Hawks, then sliding to pick No.27 and receiving future second- and third-round selections as part of the deal........well anything is possible.

Not to mention taking a small pressure forward in Jacob Konstanty from Gippsland Power with our exciting pick 20.

                    smokes !!!! lol

we either needed those picks to use this season........ and or we felt that the talent was so so last National Draft and picks 20, 27 and 40 were good enough vs talent available and what we desired to achieve?

or all 3 will be guns and we got them for a bargain?

i didnt notice a more recent one and thought it maybe helpful when we are all looking at talent without trading for it..........and dont get me wrong........I love cooking a roast chicken but getting three nights dinners from it

                    Night one - roast chicken
                    Night two - Chicken enchiladas
Night three - chicken and veg soup

happy with a bargain when it tastes good.

It's a list published by the AFL on April 12, someone has posted it here without updating it. As good as useless as a list three months later. We know who the FA's we are interested in are, HH is a RFA, although I suspect he's just looking at leaving to eventually get a bigger contract from GWS, it's what player managers do

Barry's post below - note Vicmedia reporting Grundy contract has Pies paying $250-300k per year of his reported $900k BUT a clause in the trade that sent him to the Dees voids the Pies future payments if Grundy is on traded to a third club.

That means a third club will need to do a similar deal, unless they are willing to pick up the $900k. Geelong of course could renegotiate a deal with Grundy for a lot less money but a lot more sure fire property deals/farms :-)

Brodie Grundy is on $900k p.a. for the next 4 years. It's actually probably $800k right now ramping up to $1m for the last two since that's how contracts are done.

I think Collingwood are paying 1/2 of it. Say $400k per annum. I'm not sure if Collingwoods contribution tappers off in the later years, it probably does.

If Grundy came to Sydney, Collingwood would need to keep paying, and we would ask Melbourne to chip in for the later years. Should be able to get him for $500k p.a. (eg next year $800k = $400k pies, 400k swans, 0 demons) ..2nd last and last years $1m = 500k swans, 300k pies, 200k demons).

He's number one ruck, we dump hickey. Demons get off relatively cheap, and we get relatively cheap ruckman.

Since pies are paying some of his salary, they may have some say in his trade. Not sure?

If we get Grundy, then what do we do to keep Ladhams happy for the next 4 years?

It's already better than Grundy's. Maybe we just have Grundy as our million dollar VFL ruckman. We always find imaginative ways to wast salary cap.
