Our contested footy woes rest with the midfielders we have.

Shame Stephens wants to go, but not all that surprising.
I'll throw a couple of names up:
Tarryn Thomas. A loose cannon with a dubious past but exceptionally talented.
Paddy Dow: High draft pick that hasn't kicked on (sounds familiar) but has played some decent footy this year.
Thomas might cost a lot but Stephens wants to go to North. Dow should come quite cheap.Comment
-
Thomas isn’t going anywhere this year I don’t think.
I wondered about Dow, he’d be cheapish, but is he good enough?
AG do you mean Jack Ross or Jack Graham? Graham nearly left last year and may be even more inclined after the arrival of Taranto and Hopper. I think he’s out of contract too.
James Harmes is very gettable and won’t cost muchComment
-
So our players retiring or their contract ends 2023 are as per below and equals approx $3.5mill. This money could be used in some capacity depending who stays and who joins Sydney for 2024.
I’m guessing Paddy we pay out in 2024 but it might have a concession against our cap?
Bud $550k
Hickey $400k
Stephen’s $400k
PMcCartin $450k?
Reid $300k?
Clarke $300k?
Melican $300k?
Gould $300k?
HHK $100k?
Sheather $100k?
Owen $100k?
Magor $100k?
Rankin $100k?
Average salary is $406k in the AFL and the lowest you can earn in the squad is $100k. That’s my reading of 2023 AFL contracts."be tough, only when it gets tough"

Jack Ross | AFL
I’ve always thought Jack would flourish at the Swans like a Josh Kennedy signing
Jack has only played 20 more games then Stephen’s but he is contracted for 2024 and would be tricky to make happen …….but if we don’t think we need all our picks because we don’t love this draft……..adding a 23yr old inside and letting go 22yr old former pick 5 makes a lot of sense for our list and our 2024 assault
James Jordan is another contracted Melbourne midfielder but favoured to go to Saints.
I also like Dow as some have suggested.
Midfielder replacement options out there for Stephens but would need to trade for them. Important we get best trade pick as possible from North for Stephens.Comment

Hi MW
I meant Jack Ross but I forgot that Jack Graham only signed a one year contract for 2023 and is out of contract for 2024 and he could be a likely player for us if we let go Clarke and or Stephen’s and not cost the earth but would add some grit to the contested challenge we are struggling with at the Swans"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Pick 39 isn’t enough. Pick 16 will be 20+ by the time it is used which is closer but North won’t agree. Think it might depend on any assistance package the Roos get from the AFL. Didn’t the Suns receive picks which have to be traded for players? That may open up a new angle.Comment

Reading Melican's bio, it looks as though next year is his year to shine, he missed all of 2022! His tackling is elite and his spoils above average. Not great at intercepting, but with McCartin and Blakey also Francis, that is okay. If we don't get McKay he may be just the guy, at least better than the other possibilies being suggested. Unfortunately only 194cm.Comment

It’s a drama unfolding and I’m loving it ????
Shakespeare would love it ????
We are in a window so the risk reward ratio becomes a little more rubbery to get what you want and need pronto !!!
In 2023, even with significant injuries, a tougher draw vs 2022 and not great contested stats which has been horses vocal frustration in the media ……..and featured in those rare training videos with audio verifying Horses area for continuous improvement “contested footy”
We still made 7th in 2023 and top4 in 2022.
We are biting right at the edge of the Tuna school and need to unleash right into the action in 2024.
A few chess pieces short right now.
Hopefully two out of three can be solved via trades this year.
If we get lucky maybe another inside mid trench solider given our access to $3.5 mill available from 2023 contracted players not contracted for 2024 at this stage …….. obviously some of that $3.5m has already been used for Blakey, Amartey, McLean and the likes ????

I implore people to write down a current best 22. That way, when you throw up a trade-in target you can consider who they are directly replacing in the side.
For example, my 22
Back 7 - McCartin, Rampe, Blakey, Melican, Lloyd, Florent, Cunningham
Mid 9 - Ladhams, Gulden, Warner, Mills, Parker, Rowbottom, Sheldrick, McInerney, Campbell
Forward 6 - McLean, Amartey, McDonald, Heeney, Papley, Hayward.
Some of the mids will rotate forward at times and vice versa but you get the idea.
Now that I’ve done this, I can easily see that Grundy can replace Ladhams. McKay can replace Melican. However, a Paddy Dow or Jack Ross doesn’t easily replace anyone as an upgrade. Try it.Comment

Buku Kamis, out of contract Footscray NGA is an interesting name I mentioned before. He kicked 41 goals for their VFL side but Gerard Healey, in his radio program discussion with Cornes, reckons he has great potential as an intercept backman, where he has played well. Tall, athletic and skilled young talent who is finding it hard to break into Dogs side, which is amazing given that they didn't make the 8. Plenty of upside and sort of like Allir Allir.Comment

Ie can our mids be the comps best contested team in the comp - which is what Horse has banged on about and caught on video footage as an area of improvement he challenged our squad in the pre season with ?
Horse himself is saying we are way off track in this area if we want to dominate and be a serious GF team.
For me I err on the side of we need a better solution than what we have right now for our contested footy."be tough, only when it gets tough"
