I think Francis OK as a depth player which we need now - he is never going to be a star for sure.
Hickey will be done at the end of the year - he still tries bloody hard and I admire him for that.
As for T.McCartin - if he doesnt play next week he might be done - what is it? 4 or 5 weeks since he was concussed? We need Mills back 1 million percent.Comment

What moves did he make in the game that had a positive infulence for us? Francis from back to forward? Stephens as sub? Playing players in their prefered position isn't something that should be celebrated. An AFL coach should know a players best position when selecting a side..

We put in a fairly strong effort against a very good side on their home deck so you can probably lay off him for at least one week...

Terrific game by Cunningham. Other positives were Campbell’s continued improvement; that goal was a thing of beauty, Rowbottom putting in another top game, Sheldrick showing why we drafted him, Amartey displaying athleticism and skill, Buller negating Andrews. Unfortunately some of our stars and stalwarts are right out of form, and Hickey looks like a man who hasn’t had a pre-season. Plays OK for about the first 10 minutes of each quarter, then fades. I guess Brisbane have the talent to challenge, but I’d be astonished if they won the flag, or even made the GF.
The umpiring was extraordinary, and not in a good way. That free kick against Florent…? The “insufficient intent” right up against the boundary line…? Among others.

Agree troyjones2525 - it was worth a try with Francis and Fox.
Francis only went there because Buller was subbed out - be a huge fitness step up for him.
Fox has been one of our better players this year so he is allowed an average game.Comment

Wicks’s late hit was a momentum changer. Dumb stuff.
Papley goes for low-percentage plays when things aren’t going his way (plus a brain-fade with that 50). They rarely come off. Wicks guilty as well. Sometimes you just have to take the hit and not turn the ball over. Our forward pressure has been pretty average this year and too many entries come straight back out with interest. Brisbane managed a scoring shot from good percentage of their inside 50s. Thankfully they couldn’t kick many of them - score was sort of flattering, to be honest.
Great effort from our mids against a quality opponent. They deserved a bit more reward, but looked solid and something to work with.
A tough night overall, but I’m not ready to go down the ‘honourable loss’ path.Comment

When was talent a pre-requisite for modern umpires.
All I want is consistency. Lions had blatant insufficient attempt to keep the ball in on several occasions and got away with it, we dare touch it before it went out and it seemed to be a free.
And that's before the joy of the joke that is holding the ball/incorrect disposal etc.
But the effort tonight was terrific and reminded us there is a very good team lurking in there with some elite talent.
Great to see Sheldrick really step up tonight and say I'm good enough at this level. Kid is exactly what we need in the midfield group and he can kick a goal too.
Rowy great again in a more attacking role, and Campbell's great season continues.
Hope Arnold has a good game in ressies tomorrow or Tommy is back. I want to like Francis but he is just dreadful once the ball gets past the initial contest.

I'm saying it's no longer a game where you simply look down the list and automatically pick X player in their best position, irrespective of anything else.
I.e. coaches now balance a wide range of factors, which means sometimes players are picked but playing a role that isn't their best position on a park.

We did seem to be copping it when it looked like we were the team going harder early. But they looked a class above as the game went on.

Kostanty clearly drafted for that role but has had a slow start to life at the club.
Clear gap that is really hurting us at the moment.
I still think it was our best overall performance for several weeks however. We don't have enough avenues to goal in particular which hurt us early on.
But the endeavour and style of play was much better then some of the absolutely turgid stuff we've dished up at times this year.

It really feels like some of the current crop of umpires are very desperate to be the centre of attention, and so almost guess at times. Not convinced at all by the extra umpire being an improvement at all.

In terms of forward pressure, we need to find small forwards to fill the gaps. Wicks is always full of brain fades, paps busy playing a lot of midfield.
