Life can be harsh. Cripple the club captain and get sent to North Melbourne for punishment. Poor Jacob, he didn't deserve that.
On to the draft and here's hoping it is far more fruitful than 2022.Comment

Caleb and parks no comparison Both p/s players yes but daniels was gifted to Bulldogs. Why are most afl clubs and the afl itself against us. We pay for our academy (does any other team ),NGA s so teams pay any money for these thru the years or just let them look over the facilities and maybe attend a couple of training sessions (eg dons with kato). And yes the afl is bringing in changs next year for academy players as regards drafting, but inproving the lot of clubs chasing nga kids like jamarra HH )bulldogs)
As for the swans forget about coaches maybe we should be chasing hard nosed recruiters who know how to haggle for their club like adrian dedoro ex dons.Comment

There have been a few instances of players aligned to a club academy attending school in Victoria. Sometimes that's because they're from a rural area. Sometimes it might be because they got a scholarship to the school. Or it might just be the parents' choice.
Our own Daniel Robinson was one such player who completed his schooling in the Melbourne APS system.Comment

I didn’t realise Konstanty was still contracted for 2025?
oh well we have created two open spots and a significant amount of dollars ie approx $1.1m min I would say?
we have done the right thing by a champion of our club
we got a pretty good deal the year before from North re Stephen’s so that sort of averages out the pick 44 for Parker
ie reminder re the Stephen’s deal below
“In the deal the Swans receive selection 19 in the 2024 NAB AFL Draft and selection 44 in the upcoming 2023 Draft.
In return North Melbourne receive the Swans’ selection 25 in the 2023 Draft and midfielder, Stephens.”"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Thanks for the Clarification Thunder Shaker. Port can't split their pick 13 then with our 19 & 22 as neither are first rounders (assuming pick 18 is end of 1st round)?
Without having any expert knowledge of the draft pool but keep hearing it's a super draft, rather we use all our current picks to draft in new blood than trading them away. Good chance decent talent could slip even to our last pick 59.
it's a year where clubs prognosis of the talent order could vary widely, increasing likelihood of bargains slipping down on the night. Hope we get our prognosis right, as we failed to do so in 2022 with the benefit of hindsight (Konstanty & Vickery).Comment

So we have now bailed out of our poorly constructed 2022 draft with the dumping of Vickery and Konstanty. We really need to do better with our selections.
Without any pick trades we will have a couple of picks in the 20s plus pick 44, which we meed to match a bid on Cochran, given he aced the time trial.
We have 5 open spots as of now, including class B rookies. We could be in the market for a DFA to fill out the numbers.
I would like to see us delist McAndrew, as we can't give Will Green proper ruck time with he and Ladhams playing in the VFL.
We really don't need to delist anyone else, biven we don't fave draft pikcs or other target to fill the vacancies. Now it's just up to our recruiters to do good player evaluations and get few solid players with our draft picks.
Happy that a champion Swan like Parker got a 3 year contract to continue his career with a new role and opportunities.
We've got a good list in a good demographic. We just need to perform up to our capabilities next year and sign Chad Warder. We don't need another 2 draft picks from 2025. We need Chad. Let's see how it plays out
Of the others, Vickery never really looked like making the grade, so I'm not really sure what the recruiters saw in him? Magor was a reasonable punt late in the rookie draft, as he was pretty skilful and I wouldn't have been surprised if he was given another year on the rookie list. While the other player that we took in that rookie draft, Owen, always looked pretty terrible. So, not a great haul.
I'd probably keep McAndrew. I think his ruck work and defensive efforts are better than Ladhams, even if some other aspects of his game have been frustratingly slow to develop. And I think the lack of opportunity for Green, was probably a result of our ruckmen being surprisingly healthy last year. I mean, I'm sure that in times past, we've had four or five ruckmen on the list and they've all been injured at the one time. So, it just needs a normal rate of injuries or Ladhams getting a lengthy suspension, and Green will have plenty of opportunity.
Which, unless I'm forgetting someone, means that we just have three main list vacancies. So perhaps we just use picks 19 and 22, then match a bid on Cochran and forget about taking someone late from the open draft? Although it might be possible to take a player with pick 44, if a bid doesn't come for Cochran, then hope he slips through to the rookie draft? Which might be possible, since none of the draft experts are talking him up. Although personally, I think he'd be a bargain at 44.
Now that that's all starting to seem a bit messy to me, I'm wondering if Francis has been given a new contract, and if not, could an extra list spot be created by delisting him? Although, I actually quite like Francis and I'm not entirely convinced that we'd get someone better with a late pick.
Ugghh, list management is so confusing and I really don't envy the people who are paid to do it.Comment

Good informative post Deja.
Francis, Hamling, & Ladhams appears excess of experienced big men on paper in not getting regular senior games. Problem may extentuate further if we depart from playing 3 talls in the forward line next year, leaving Armatey & MacLean fighting for 2nd tall forward spot (Logan being first preference).
This should enable both Sheldrick & Cleary opportunities to prove themselves, plus Co Warney who i also think has upside.
Are Patrick Snell & Will Edwards ready for senior call ups? Rampe, Lloyd & Harry are in their twilights now. Interesting pre-season ahead.Comment

Both are considered "first round picks" for the purposes of that rule, even if they slip into the early 20s in terms of actual pick.Comment
