The AFL website published some rubbery numbers today: How many picks your club is set to use at the 2024 AFL Draft

    * Sydney Swans likely to use three or four picks.
    * Draft will be likely to have between 61 and 70 picks.
    * Fewest picks: two (Adelaide and Hawthorn), Gold Coast two or three.
    * Most picks: Richmond (so many the article couldn't put a number on number of picks Richmond will use. Richmond currently holds 8 of the first 24 picks.)
    * Average selections used in the past five drafts: 62

      First of the many mock drafts to come. This one by Zero Hanger has us taking the following in the first round;
Pick 23 (pick 19 sliding back): Kayle Gerreyn . Powerfully built 199cm Forward-Ruck from WA
Pick 26 (Pick 22 sldiing back): Jesse Dattoli 179cm, X- factor Forward-Midfileder from Vic who also possesses a good leap.

Not familiar with the draft pool but hope we pick up a quality Key Defender being our priority.

Why do we get labelled with a midfielder? The least of our needs. We let Konstanty go.

I posted about defenders earlier at post 825 covering the top 30 September rankings.

The 10 next best has four more defenders, though there may be some overlap on both lists.

Basically I looked at the draft rankings and just searched for "defender".

I would personally like to take 2 Talls, but I doubt that will happen

Paul Roos always argued against drafting talls - if they turn out being not good enough to ruck or KPP then they're a wasted pick. If you draft a mid fielder they may be turned into a HBF, a tagger or Back pocket. He favoured rookie-ing talls or trading for them after they prove they can play. eg - Ted, Reg, Mummy, Jolly, Bally, Pykey, BBBH, Bud, Tippo, etc.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

I know that was his philosophy, but we've wasted a fair number of picks on non-talls over the last couple of decades. The names are known to most.

And if you rely on trading for talls, you'll either overpay or you'll most likely pick up second rate ones. Especially forwards. There are a smattering of top level defenders who've been picked late in the draft or in the rookie draft but there are very few forwards who fit that bill. Until recently it seemed almost impossible to secure a good quality forward late in the draft but Nick Larkey, Ben Brown and Josh Treacy have bucked that trend.

Sam Taylor a Pick 27 and signed forever as a WA fella has to be one of the best stories around.

Pick 23 is generally higher than what the experts are saying for Gerreyn, but I wouldn't be unhappy if we took him. He didn't have too many opportunities when I saw him play for WA in the championship, but he did look to have a fair bit of class when he did get involved. Twomey has him in the 31-40 bracket and Rookie Me are pretty positive.

West Perth tall Kayle Gerreyn is an agile, but physically imposing ruck-forward who dominated the WAFL Colts competition in 2024.

I'm not enthused by the idea of (another) ruck forward. They are rarely great forwards and rarely great rucks. Players who are useful in that they can fill in in both roles, but rarely be a star. There have been some excellent forwards capable of doing some ruck work (eg Daniher, Hawkins) but they're not really what I'd classify as ruck forwards.

Our issue is that Ladhams, McLean, Amartey and Buller are all probably best described as "ruck forwards". Barely adequate forwards. So-so as relief rucks. If we're going to draft a forward I'd rather one who has good (or the potential for good) forward craft, not one who, by virtue of a few extra cms, might be able to chop out in the ruck.

Of course, if there's a Paul Salmon to be had...(Or even a Kurt Tippett without the injury and other drama.)

I'd be surprised if we persisted with the 3 tall forward setup next year. I think Logan is the most natural key forward of the three, with the better footy smarts & be given focal role which may excel him. Armatey, Maclean & Buller fight for the remaining 2nd fall forward spot..

What are the odds on us picking Oliver listed at pick 26. He is an 181cm defender!

So would I. We appeared a bit too top heavy, and two key forwards looks better balanced. McDonald and Amartey I believe have the most potential to improve so I would think they would be the preferred option, although McLean is a viable second ruck and offers a reliable contest in the forward 50.
Either way, 2025 is the year McDonald needs to step up and start dominating games.

Would love to see Mclean or Amartey turned into a Defender or they have to play Hamling as a Defender. Fox needs to be permanently in Defence too.

That's the hole I see in our team, 1 tall defender short, with a vulnerability Rampe only plays 15 games.

Amartey is only a fwd, Mclean is more versatile but isn't a ruck.

Ladhams has to play in my mind, Grundy was worn out by Rd 15 and this year we may as well not have had a ruck when he wasnt in there

No doubt Ladams has ability but can't see Mclean as a KPD. Not agile enough IMO.
