That Midweek Tackle show is painful to watch, three poor quality footy journo's bumbling about to try and get a fire going but appearing like they have got their tinder wet!
The Grundy segment was woeful, they threw around conflicting rubbery figures as to what Grundy was getting paid and made it appear as if Swans are suddenly shocked about his contract. As if! They then threw in the fact we have players to re-sign this season like it was a disaster about to explode that we haven't planned for.
What a lot of old toss, here are the facts - when we recruited Grundy we knew EXACTLY how much he would cost US over the four years of his contract and we knew EXACTLY how much his separate contract with Collingwood was.
It was widely reported his original contract at Collingwood was 7 x $900k, a substantial contract AT THAT TIME, before the new CBA was signed. It was widely reported that when Grundy went to Melbourne, they paid $650k pa and Grundy had a separate contract with the Pies for the remainder of 5 x $250k pa. We just mirrored the Melbourne contract when we traded in Grundy, the Pies contract is between Grundy and the Pies.
FACT - with the new CBA, the Salary Cap jumped significantly last season, this season it is $15.8mill. I figure that Grundy's $650k is 4.1% of our Salary Cap. If Grundy is being paid more this season than the $650k, then it's because we have front ended his contract to give us more cap space in future years.
There's no cap crisis at the Swans, it's just these TV Muppets trying to find a story "Swans Salary Cap crisis" to promote their show. Full confidence in the club to go about their business as usual.

I was at the dentist this morning and saw the article in the Tele - no detail just supposition: ie, we didn't give up a first rounder for Grundy therefore we must be shouldering more of his paypacket (1.1 was suggested).Comment

I'm just here to say we should have drafted Serong or Flanders instead of Dylan Stephens.... [emoji12]

Serrong was also a highly midfielder in the top 5-8 range and he was a Swans supporter.
Your recruiters are supposed to spend the most time on your high end draft picks, because they don’t come around very often.
Blowing a pick six is not the same as blowing a pick 40, nor is it made up by jagging a top player with a pick 40 (especially if the latter is an academy player that we have inside knowledge of).
That said, we can’t always get it right, but the Stephens one really hurts (along with Vespremi and Ling).Comment

Warner, and Errol, Goodes, Parker and other late gems like Shai Bolton are not equivalents to Stephens/Serrong or to a lesser extent Wombat/JVR.

We know all the names so I won't bore people anymore.
Let's hope of three year ruckman project plays out....
I find the media love of KB quite bizarre given his record to be honestComment

The sad fact is that with the exception of the Academy players that land on his lap KB has an absolutely appalling record with his top 20 selections.

Vespremi, Ling, Stevens, Rohan, Jones, Lamb, Towers, Johnston?
Florent and Wilbur picks, glosses over our major fkup that year where we traded pick 18 for Michael Tahlia.
Pick 18 was Sam Powell-Pepper, and pick 19 was Tim English! Both 100+ gamers, the first a top three B&F, and the latter an All Australian ruckman…
Impossible to predict, but what a sliding doors moment!
If we had kept pick 18 and drafted English, then we wouldn’t have drafted and lost Cameron for unders, we might have stuck with Aliir Aliir instead of allowing his trade, and then getting in Hickey.
The Dawson for Ladhams and pick 12 slide back to 16, would have been for different player/draft picks instead too.
I guess a lot of it is tied to the Kurt Tippett trade (which also got us a trade ban), which also may have contributed to us losing Tim Membrey.
We can never know, but a fun yarn.Comment
