Shame to see Parker go, as obviously it would be nice, if someone with a long-term record of high achievement at the club remained a one club player. Still, perhaps North are offering him more than we're prepared to offer, both salary wise and/or playing time? Although, him leaving is dependent on a trade getting done. Which I think may have a reasonable chance of falling over. That is, North might not want to offer much for a 31 year old and we might want more than not much, for a former All Australian and three time Skilton Medal winner.
And on draft picks, I'm a bit annoyed that our current pick 19 is likely to now blow out further, due to a decision of the AFL. While both our picks 17 and 19 were likely to be pushed back, because of band 1 compensation picks and clubs matching academy and f/s bids, the AFL has ruled that band 2, end of first round, compensation picks, will have priority over our end of first round pick, that we got from North in the Dylan Stephens trade. Somehow, clubs being compensated because their draft picks only played for eight years before going elsewhere, is deemed to have more importance than a recently completed trade. I suspect that the main reason for the decision, is that it will only irritate us and Suns, who also acquired an end of first round pick from North; rather than any Victorian clubs who might be in line for band 2 picks. Although I suppose we could get lucky and the AFL's secret recipe doesn't deliver up any band 2 picks this year.

I can’t think of another team that’s come back to win after to losing two in quick succession let alone being humiliated both times?
Geelong in the 90s and Pies in 02/03 are the only two I’ve thought of. Geelong won 12seasons later and Pies 7 years. Pies didn’t have a single player that played 03 and 10.
However, that's recent history. A counter example: Hawthorn belted Essendon in 1983, Essendon won a closely-contested game against Hawthorn in 1984, Essendon belted Hawthorn in 1985.
We need some significant changes to our list if we're going to be winning next year. Our deficiencies in defence are well known. I have been wanting to draft tall defenders in the draft for a few years now. Picking up Hamling as a free agent and drafting Snell may have helped there, but neither of them have played a senior game for us.
We currently hold picks 17 and 19 (assuming the AFL doesn't mess that up by inserting free agency compo picks before pick 19). I would like to see one of these picks used on a tall defender.
Defenders in this draft, top 30 from Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide: Top 2024 draft prospects' September ranking:
* 10 Alix Tauru 193cm tall defender
* 11 Tobie Travaglia 187 cm defender
* 12 Bo Allan 191 cm midfielder/defender
* 16 Luke Trainor 194 cm defender
* 19 Jobe Shanahan 194 tall forward - mentioned as a possibility to be a key defender as well
* 25 Matt Whitlock 199 cm key forward/defender
* 29 Harry Oliver 181 cm defender
I wouldn't be surprised if Sydney recruited one of these defenders, the taller the better."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Players of similar age profile with likelihood of similar tenure (I've assumed three year deals) - Taylor Adams to Swans - pick 33; Lachie Hunter (slightly younger but more, shall we say, trouble) - third round.
So something either side of 40.Comment

why should we let him (parks) gfo for anything other than a high pick. Wven though we picked him up in a draft for pick 40, he was co capt from 2019-2013, is a 3 *club chanpion and a five times kirk medalist. He aalso played in a premiership and has played in 26 finals. Hes not eligible for a free agent ans is signed for 2025. My walier suggestion os round 1 pick swaps seems tgo me to be fair. pick 2 for 17 or 19 (which we got from nth) .

Now, I agree with not extending his contract to keep him … but
Maybe I’m old and sentimental, but by lord I’ll miss Luke Parker. The guy was just hard nosed, blood and guts, unconditional and pure red and white footy.
A ball to be won - he went for it. A mark needed - he took it. A hit to be absorbed - sure thing. Send him forward to kick a goal - done. The guy is a legend. And we will probably never understand what it took to lead this club through down years and then COVID. But he (and Ramps) did it.
What a soldier and hard ass he’s been.👍 4Comment

Parker said the decision to leave was one he thought he would never have to make. And I thought the same (until recently). He is not only a champion of the club, he is also a very decent person, and much loved by fans.Comment

Luke Parker is my favourite player. I love how uncompromising his attack on the ball has been and how he's a pretty decent set shot when he goes forward. He will always be a Swan in my mind and heart - much like Hanners.
I can't begrudge Luke setting up his retirement from footy with another club who will offer him more. And ... I can't begrudge the Swans organisation for letting him go as it frees up a spot, salary cap etc.
I think Sheldrick needs to come into the guts and play more permanently in 2025.Comment

I so totally agree. I am very very saddened by this. It greatly exacerbates the hurt from the GF thumping. Just doesn’t sit well with me that we lose Parker — a heart and soul Blood — while we have Adams for two more years. (That is not meant as a criticism of Adams as such.)

But it is also modern footy, which has very little room for sentimentality. If rumours are to be believed, we were on the hook for some serious $ for the last year of Parkers contract ($700K+ I've heard), and North is offering him an exceptionally good deal that will help set him up for retirement - and give him a great chance to learn under a different master coach, if he does want to stay involved in the game. So I suspect, despite the rumour around he is cut because he had to come back via the 2nds etc, that this is probably a deal that has been in the cooking from well before that to some degree - I doubt Clarkson and North approach him mid season. So unless we see something definitive come out, I suspect it was a more mutually agreed decision by both parties than it may be portrayed.
He will be greatly missed - but I'd hope if he stays in the game, we will see him back at the club at some point!"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."👍 1Comment
