Whilst Sydney (the city) has shown it has amazing opportunities for players with academic financial ability (Ball,Barry, Pyke, Richards,DeBoer), one would have to think Errol’s strength is his incredible footy IQ. His post-football career will be in footy-probably coaching.
The Swannies are pretty good in helping their players post-footy. Errol is not going to be 35 struggling to put food on the table. And 40% tax (alright-for the stuff not negatively geared and in trusts) means the difference is not as great as it sounds between $1.25 million and $1.5million.

AFL website reported yesterday that the Swans and Rowbottom’s management are close on a four year deal.

He fits the mould off field misadventure like Glen Maxwell and nobody makes Glen Maxwell captain despite like Mills being a match winner. That’s just not good enough for someone who wants to hold the captains job.

Give the job to Errol and all this speculation goes away. Errol deserves it.
They can’t do that this before his current contract ends.

The club only made Mills captain earlier this year, and naming Errol as captain before year end will cause us massive reputational damage.

They can however as others have said, dangle it in front of him as a future opportunity, but so can other clubs too. They can say look at Dawson, he has been accepted as captain after only one year.

I think it's unlikely Gulden will leave. He's "at home", says he loves the club, and recognises his status as a local boy and academy graduate, and all that means for his profile. And there will be some commercial benefits too. There may not be as many opportunities to be the face of a sponsor in NSW as there are in Melbourne, but if you're the highest profile player at the club, those opportunities are very much there. Right now, post-Buddy, Isaac is the most recognisable face at the club but if Errol is interested in that kind of thing, there will be plenty of opportunities in the near future for him to supplement his earnings that way.

So the question is less whether he stays, and more how much money he's prepared to leave on the table by staying so that the club can also retain Logan, Chad, McInerney, Florent, Hayward, McCartin et al (assuming they all want to stay). Good as he is, he won't win a premiership with the club (or with any club) if he doesn't have plenty of excellent players around him.

Absolutely Liz- the club will find the money needed, and the commercial opportunities will be very substantial, especially if we manage to win a flag. Dawson was different as he wasn’t home grown so the “go home” factor came into play, more so than the money. Of course we need to retain all the players you mention and I’m sure we will, as the club will do everything it can to do so. If they all love the club, as they say they do, (and why wouldn’t they?) then contracts will be signed. I’m not at all anxious about losing any of our exciting youngsters. But if someone wants to leave, then I say Ciao baby!????

The Tradies podcast last week talked about Gulden’s situation. They said that his agent Ben Williams is known to test the market for his clients. He did it for Heeney (he also represents Logan McDonald) at his last contract extension where Isaac apparently met with the Suns before committing to the Swans

I posted this before some weeks ago.

Footy Wire has us having 19 players that are uncontracted for next year (but some info is incorrect, eg Jordon has a three more years)

AFL Out of Contract Players in 2024

Let’s assume they are correct for everyone except for Jordon. We have about the sixth most number of unsigned players for next year. It hasn’t happened by accident, the Swans would have been planning for years re Total Player Payments changes etc.

That doesn’t mean we can afford everyone we want to keep.

With big dollars/years going to Errol, Logan, Florent, RB and Hayward, something has to give.

Normally we don’t chat about delistings in round 2/3, but our large number of unsigned players and the dollars needed, I can’t help wondering if at the end of this year:

                - Reid will need to go or play on at absolute bottom dollar
                - Francis will be delisted now Melican is having a good run with form and injury, we have Hamling and Snell, plus Edwards is coming along
                - we will trade Ladhams or McAndrew as we really don’t need four rucks plus McLean.
                - we need to trade out some players for 2024 or future draft picks (someone suggested Lloyd).
                - Vickery has run out of time, given our depth with Taylor and Adams still playing on in 2025, plus Jordon being able to play some small forward.

Especially as we need to make spots available every year under AFL rules.

Such fascinating times! A great mostly healthy list, heaps of players not signed for next year, and upcoming generational change with Rampe and Parker not certain to continue past 2025.

The Jordon one is interesting, as there were comments online that he signed for 4 years?

Maybe a bit hair trigger on Vickery? He's only had 1 injury interrupted season - plus last weeks game.

Not to mention Taylor Adams now (or next season) occupying two spots on the list.

My understanding 'in the trade period' that the Swans were offering a tiered 3 year deal for Patch.................that was some of the comments verbally.

it is always a mystery unless every reporter has free reign to chase down a Buddy type 9 year deal , and all the supposed details.

I am not saying Vickery should go.

Just saying he might be an unlucky delisting if we keep all of Errol, Logan, Florent, Rowbottom, Hayward, Melican, Fox and Cunningham, and no players (like Lloyd) are traded away.

There are no looming retirements this year (apart from maybe Sam Reid) so the other options for delisting or trade amongst non-contracted players next year are:

Reid, Ladhams (trade), McAndrew (trade), Edwards, Arnold, Buller, Francis, Reid and Magor. That's a heap of tall players (apart from Magor at 185) and it is unlikely we will delist/trade out three talls, so that really leaves Magor and Vickery as someone with potential, who will make way for our 2025 recruitments (like Clarke, Sheather, HKH etc last year).

I misunderstood the intent of your "Vickery has run out of time" comment Mal - all good.

I'm glad I didn't mention the "Taylor and Adams" thing

You know what - none of us really have much idea about all this stuff. The way $ figures are thrown about is a touch amusing to be honest.

If the year pans out as we all hope, like most other pointy end teams, we won't have players jumping ship, with all the hassle that involves, just for a small amount extra.

Of players we wanted to keep, only Dawson has left in recent times and that was for family reasons not $. Getting paid similar to what we had on the table. Over the top offers tend to come from non contenders if a player is interested in the $. Taranto and Hopper happy with the outlook at Richmond?

Florent has been mentioned as wanting more midfield time, at which club will he get that?

                                In the club I trust
