I had 10 minutes to spare this evening waiting for a bus so I popped into Borders and picked up a copy of The Draft, which I think was just published yesterday. It follows the prospects of 5 likely draftees in their year before last year's draft - one of them being Vezspremi. I've only just dipped into bits of it but I suspect it's required reading for anyone on here fascinated by what kind of player he might become. Which I suspect might be pretty much every RWO member...

    A snippet or two:

Pat was 17 and badly wanted to play AFL football. He'd wanted it ever since he was eight, when he went to the MCG for the first time...Nathan Buckley kicked a goal from the 50-metre line that day...The crowd roared and Pat glanced around, imagining how amazing it would feel if all those people were cheering for him.
(Peter Kennedy) thought the criticism was a little too much but passed it on nonetheless. There's a time and a place, he told Pat. "It's good to celebrate when there's 5 points the difference 30 minutes into the last quarter, but when you're 15 goals up and you kick a goal, you don't need to do a war dance or shoot arrows in the sky"...Pat could hardly believe it at first. But..."I can see what they mean. Sort of. But it's not every day you get to kick a goal for Australia".

The book is written by The Age's Emma Quayle. I wonder if Caro had pre-read a copy (I am pretty sure she would have had access to one) and that was what lead her to commenting on Vez's goal celebrations on Saturday night. After all, they weren't really that OTT for an 18 year old still in his first few games of senior footy.

Overall the picture that seems to be painted of him is someone who knew he had some talent but was still insecure about how much and whether he'd get to live his dream. Which is weird because first time I saw him play, out on Bus Stop Oval back in March, he struck me as someone who knew exactly how good he was. (Which I don't think is a bad thing at all.)

      Very hard one to pick.
I think we need to take the Brisbane game into perspective, very little pressure on Moore had a very inexperienced opponent and there defensive pressure in our FWD 50 was poor. He did make the most of his chances but needs to continue this type of form consistently and against top quality opposition - lets see how he goes this weekend - same with McVeigh

Playing for the Swans will soon drum that out of him...

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

                Good article on those guys.

Agree that adelaide is a hole and if Vespremi ever wants a fly fishing partner I am available.

the out for Goodes and O'keefe will be(must be) Ablett and Grundy(or Jack), they cannot drop Veszpa or Moore.

I liked this excerpt from 'The Draft' by Emma Quayle about Veszpremi from Hawks recruiting manager John Turnbull's notes:

"...exuberant but needs attention from coaches...a harmless, affable semi-clown who has a need to be noticed, loved and reassured...will need time to be accepted..."

I knew there was something about him that reminded me of Nick Davis!

It's a fascinating book, really gives an insight into the hopes and dreams of the potential draftees.

I snuck a look at a few pages of the book in A&R yesterday. Seems like a great idea for a book, well-executed. The draft is a pretty demanding exercise, especially for 18, 19yo kids with typical adolescent issues to deal with.

Hasn't taken Vespa long to be accepted by Swans fans though

Hasn't been much talk about ripping up memberships this year, so they must be approving of what the coaching staff is doing.

Ah, but you forget last week's "Don't drop Vespa or I'll tear it up" sentiments.
I had mine suspended over a candle, so luckily it is only slightly warped. Just like it's owner.
