Longmire referring to players who may want to leave for more opportunities in no way validates anything with regards to the Tippett rumours. He was referring to those fringe players who may want to seek other opportunities elsewhere - for example TDL, Cambo Heath, White, Gordon. He would be willing to part with players like that if they could get a better run elsewhere - pretty much a standard response from a premiership coach regarding fringe players in the squad. I don't consider Grundy as someone who would be needing to seek more opportunities elsewhere.

Normally I would think after a Premiership we could stand pat and go into the next season feeling very confident. But after seeing the way some of the top teams have scooped up quality players makes me think that we have to improve or get left behind. It's going to be really tough next year. Let's not kid ourselves.
The kind of money being talked about for Tippett makes me sick, but this is the environment we are in. We don't dictate the value of players, the market does.
We are a very solid team across the ground, except for tall forwards. And we are not missing much. This we all know. A Reid-Tippo combination would put us right up there with the best. The second best option is staying pat with LRT or hoping Walsh or White improve over the next season. Not the worst case scenario, but let's face it: They are not in the class of Tippett. This is probably our only realistic opportunity to improve from outside the club.
So if we can convince Tippett to choose us as the club he wants to go to, what can we offer Adelaide? We are in a reasonable position, because if Adelaide reject our offer, he goes to GC in the PSD and they get nothing. We just need to be fair. Of all the premiership players, Grundy is the easiest to give up: He's a quality player (about the same level as a defender that Tippett is as a forward), in the same age bracket as Tippett and it would not be the end of the world for him to go to SA, since he will be going home. And Adelaide are definitely contenders, so it's not like he would be going to Port. He is replaceable by LRT, without any real quality loss to the defence. We have reasonable backups in Spangher, and up and comers Lockyer and Brown and Lynch. Ted and LRT are probably good for another 3 years, so we have some breathing room. Surely we will look to get another few KPPs over the next few drafts.
I think it's important to keep the current midfield group together as we will be losing Jude, ROK and Goodes over the next few years. We have some good depth coming through, but not too much to spare.
I think TDL and White are both tradeable and have some value. Could bring a draft pick to help spice up a deal with Adelaide. I would hate to give up an already low 1st round draft pick. Adelaide fans will call it robbery, but I think Grundy and a pick in the 30s is reasonable, and a hell of a lot better than the alternative for them (nothing).
All of the above is of course assuming that the scuttlebutt going around is true.Comment

I would much prefer to hear some rumors linking us to Gumbleton. I know he has had a lot of injuries, but the suggestion is they've got his back problems fixed, and I think other than the back related stuff his only real injury in the last couple of years was a punctured lung which could happen to anyone. Tippett played 21 games for 39 goals this year, which is good, but based on that he's not the next Plugger by any stretch of the imagination. Gumbleton played 6 games for 11 goals in a losing side, that's the same goals per game, he's younger than Tippett, probably worth a lot less in a trade, and I bet he wouldn't cost us 10% of our total salary cap either.Comment

Still think the Tippett talk is just that, talk.
We just don't have the ability to get trades done this year.
Melbourne and Bulldogs whilst not top class destinations for players are the ones that hold the key for many trades as they have picks 3, 4, 5 & 6.
Josh Caddy from GCS to a Melbourne club would realistically bring a high single figure draft pick so GCS would have the high draft pick to get Tippett from Adelaide, We don't!
I think Tippett is a risk anyway and we are not a club that takes risks.
Still think Moloney for free is worthwhile, the guy can play, plays like a raging bull which suits our style and adds to our midfield depth so we can rest players during the year ala Geelong of 2011. That would be desirable given the age of many of our midfielders, keep them fresh for the 2013 GF!Comment

The big chance is that the crows want to avoid losing him for nothing so take a bit less, wheres seabyTheres not much left to sayComment

I trust the recruiters and coaching staff to make the right decision. If they think Tippett is worth it then he probably is, they haven't got too many trades wrong before. I think we are in the box seat as Adelaide won't want him to fall through to the draft where GC can pick him up for nothing. Maybe Everitt/White/Spangher/Meredith or TDL and a pick might do it, that's better then zip from a Crows point of view.I See It But I Don't Believe It!!!!Comment

I don't think anyone will be interested in TDL. He has a year to go on his contract and he is soft. It is not his forward defensive work as I see it but his reluctance to go for the hard ball.Comment

We've just won a flag with a team that our coaches and our recruiters built, so if our coaches and our recruiters think Tippett is what we need, then I'm pretty happy to go along with them. I'm sure they have considered Gumbleton, Dawes, any other available forward you can name but I reckon they might just have the best idea of which one suits our needs the best.Comment

In any case didn't our coaches an recruiters identify Walsh as what we needed last silly-season? Why should they give up on him after a single season (during which he developed considerably as a key forward)?Comment

That might be a big if. There's plenty of rumours about us and Tippett, but bugger-all substance.

Wouldn't sell the farm to get Tippett. (Seems every year that the Swans are the ones chasing and offering the big $ to get the key position player.. I reckon the player managers use us as the big baddies that have come to steal their players..)
Bottom line is that Tippett is not a free agent, therefore he is a trade-able player only. What will Adelaide want to make it work? Look for the angles. Would suggest a lot to get him to the door...
Jesse White and TDL have come currency as forwards.. doubt that is what the Crows want. another mid or key backman and or high draft selections.. Most of which the swans don't have! Hope we have wriggle room to keep the backmen that we have (Smith and Johnston P1 and the rest P2)

My problem with acquiring Tippett is his health, if he has another concussion doctors may recommend that he not play football anymore, it happened to Scott Setvens from the crows. Then you are lumbered with a $3M liability and no player.Comment

It seems that GWS (not GC) would have the first option to pick up Tippett if no trade was secured:
Crows to get a return for TippettComment
