Tippett!!

Here's hoping GWS get him. Great for PR and the rivalry, and great for the Swans. At $1mill a year it seems to me that he throws the whole team's player value equation out. How do you value a Smith or Jack or Hannebery or Kennedy or any of our team of players against someone we don't even know will fit in? All our Bloods have earned their spots by embracing the culture. Tippett may have runs on the board elsewhere, but given his conduct through this sorry saga, for me he's an unknown.. And at GWS he'd serve the Premiership purgatory that he deserves for trying to cheat. Good riddance (although maybe he'd work out at $500K!)
And what conduct through this sorry saga? He hasn't said a thing and I would have thought that the best way to handle it.Comment

No offence, just little understanding of why blokes play footy.Comment

Yet, if he is a blood next year, you will cheer him on.Comment

I have to agree with Jono. I just rewatched the Crows final and Tippett was not worth two bob. I imagine a few of our blokes would be questioning why he'd be paid 800k+ per year.Comment

Different argument entirely. You can argue his value sure. It is naive in the extreme to say it is 'selfish and lazy' just because he wants to be traded to a club that has a chance of winning a flag. Especially as he wants to leave Adelaide. It shows little understanding of why any player plays the game.Comment

Hmmm not sure why you think you know what I do and don't know. I do know one thing - I saw a group of 22 guys who looked like they had the right attitude a bit over a month ago.....
As for cheering him - I don't think I'll have to. But if I do have to, I probably will. I reckon quite a few of us aren't all that sure of what to make of this whole schemozzle and what to think of the guy...Comment

The rest is just lots of babble.Comment

Stop trying to move the goal posts. Describing a player as 'lazy and selfish' for simply wanting to maximise his chance of winning a flag is ridiculous and exhibits a lack of understanding of why people actually play football. The bloke can't win, he's either after money or 'lazy and selfish' because he wants to win a flag. Every bloke in the comp wants to win a flag. It was a stupid thing to say.

I was probably a bit over the top in my description of Tippett earlier.Comment

Tippett's motivations during his AFC days and his desire to come to the Swans are not at all clear. On this account, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. His on-field attitude always seemed professional. Lot's of footy teams must think he's okay, since they seem willing to throw a lot of money at him. His market value is fairly well established at around $800k, as this is what Adelaide were giving him and was around what other clubs were offering as well. That translates to $880k for us with our COLA.
No question that Tippett is a quality player that would help the Swans fill its most critical need. But is he good value for money? Whenever you're laying out that much cash it's natural to second guess yourself. I am very unsure and quite ambivalent about this deal, and would feel okay anyway it goes. It's the sort of thing that can best be evaluated a year down the road.Comment

As do I.
I'm finding it pretty bizarre that Swans fans are turning on Tippett now. For what?
Tippett came out of contract with what he thought was a binding agreement to go to his club of choice. He weighed up his options and chose the Swans. When questioned, he mentioned the club, the culture and the excellent chance of winning a flag. We should feel proud as a supporter to hear players from other clubs say that. Indeed, if every player in the AFL came out of contract tomorrow and were allowed to nominate a club to play for, I'd be willing to bet a fair bit that the Swans would be the most nominated club hands down for exactly those reasons that Tippett expressed. Luke Hodge's first sentence in his GF speech spoke volumes "You're not only a well respected side, you're a well liked side"....
So now, it has dragged on way longer than anybody would have liked, Tippett has said NOTHING since he informed Adelaide of his wishes, but some Swans fans want to stick it to him??? Stick it to Adelaide and his management, but until the investigation proves that Tippett was complicit in the dodgy dealings which happened 3 years ago, I just view him as a good player who wants to play for the club we love.
As Benny said, the money issue and whether he is worth it is a seperate argument, but Tippett doesn't deserve to be pitchforked because he has asked an amount that it appears at least 4 clubs are willing to pay and a fair few more would if they could fit it into their salary cap...Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment
