There is something about the Tippett penalty that smells of a back room deal. I think the Swans negotiated it and are happy about the outcome. It is hard to unravel the various benefits and detriments, and some have elements of both.

I think Tippett could have had some success in if he pleaded not guilty. Why did he choose to plead guilty and accept to move on? I believe him when he says he trusted Adelaide and he was innocently led down this path that brought upon his fine and suspension. Bob Chapman even came out and said some nice things about Tippett. I think he could have played hard ball and probably gotten a much lighter sanction, but that may have prolonged the process and prevented him from coming to the Swans.

His behaviour in this last part of the saga, a man following the instructions of his agents and elders, reinforces my belief that he acted similarly 3 years ago; he just took the advice of the experts.

The 11 game suspension could have been agreed upon by the AFL and the Swans as not so much Tippett's penalty, but a sort of penalty to the Swans for getting Tippett for no loss of draft picks or players. Surely Tippett would have been worth the picks where we got Towers and Membrey. We have done very well by how things came to pass.

Part of it is a bit of PR as well, for all parties concerned. It lessens Tippett's value in the eye's of the public and other suitors, like GSW, so the feeling that we have stolen something from the rest of league is somewhat diminished. Also less talk about COLA.

There is a general consensus that Adelaide got off lightly and Tippett took a heavy hit. This has taken a bit of the heat off of us. And there seems to be a general acceptance now that he will be a Swan next year, and that we didn't get such a great deal after all. And this suits us just fine.

just means Goodes, Walsh, LRT, Jessie and Sammy Reid will truly need to shine in 2013

Tippett would give us the depth for 2013 to be a massive force but in reality Tippett was there for our 2014 and beyond to have a strong target up front kicking 50 goals per season and be a succession to Goodes.

I still think it is absolutely bizzare how the events have allowed us to keep Jessie next year as no doubt Tippett will be half pay next season and Jessie truly gets an opportunity to level jump.

Jessie has an opportunity to be a real target upfront and average 2 goals a game !

Imagine if by the end of 2013 we end up with the "Twin Towers"........two basketball fella's killing it in AFL !

I have a couple of friends who are golf professionals and they have said the difference between them and tour pro's is primarily between the ears. When I play with a mate he regularly hits 4 under a round and I say why dont you make a go at being a tour pro........he saids "mate standing over those 6 to 10 foot putts when you are playing for your next meal is just a mind bender"......."the mental anguish is extreme playing in pro ams let alone tour events"

Jessie also is at that point right now.......he has the lead, he has the physical build, he has a decent kick.......he must be closer to understanding the patterns of leads and structure........it is now how much he wants to be the "MAN".......be that player that the coaches have to pick because of his presence and execution !

I think it is time for the sports psychologist !

Bring in the therapist........so many players in different sports have them - why not our Jessie and even Incy for that matter !

Dear me. It sounds like you have been watching a different Jessie compared to the rest of us. The guy is a dill. He has blown every chance to "kick two goals per game" with his seemingly inability to 'feel' the game and get himself into position to take marks, contest etc. He gives away free kicks at will and does some really dumb things in the course of the game. His best chance of redemption would have been served by being picked up by fellow traveller idiots at Port, Melbourne and the baby club GWS. There, Jessie's d'oh ways would have been better disguised. No way Jessie will get a game in the firsts at the Swans this year.

Sadly I agree with all of this. However since he's on the list for another year I'll be cheering him on in the hope that a miracle does occur and he can play the football we need from him.

Stranger things have happened i guess. If Jesse does seize the day then maybe Anna will give that Josh the flick and give a certain long time RWOer a call. You never know.

            I agree totally.

I don't know if he will make it. I thought he improved considerably with his ruck work at ressie level. And have said many times that he has all the attributes of being an excellent forward/ruck, exactly the player that Tippett is. And like you say, it is just mental.

Well, the Tippett suspension and the way thinks played out might give him another chance in 2013. He has to have a strong pre-season and NAB cup, and force his way into the team by his actions. We will see!

Whether you think the penalty for Trigg was too soft or the penalty for Tippett was too harsh, there is no fairness, equity or justice that the two should side by side get roughly the same sanction. Collectively it represents two decisions that make sense to me at all.

Were the AFL indirectly and subtly punishing Sydney, and giving a wink and nudge degree of respite to their Adelaide mate Trigg. Me thinks so

I'm gutted by the penalty imposed on Tippett. If this sticks and is found to have bases than it will have major effects down the track. How many decisions/transactions rely on solicitors/accountants/managers? etc ok may just 1m a year, 5 m a year? Is then the next individual that does not do their own diligence going to cop a $300,000+ fine? Is Tippett now going to sue AFC or his manager? This whole scenario does not sit well with me. AFC must have wiped their brow and said " phewww that was a lucky escape" . There has to be more to this story or this story will grow out of control for years to come. The AFL think they have swept it under the carpet . Bad move!!

I think Vlad wanted to put the boot into the AFLPA and the players in general to show who had the authority. He used the Swans and Tippett to his advantage to make his point. This event will help keep player compensation a bit more under control. The Swans got more than enough of what they wanted to convince Tippett to cop the punishment and were happy enough to play along.

I think we would all like to see him succeed and he appears to be one of those players who on the surface has all the attributes to be a top footballer, however, he is either not good enough at the top level or unfortunately for him he is on the list of a top side. Some players can't handle the rigours of training required as it appears happened to Winmar at St Kilda, others can't get any consistency in their game or find the right position and some just aren't good enough. Some years ago Kevin Bartlett quoted some staggering figure of only one in more than a thousand (could have been greater)who start out in junior footy actually make it onto an AFL list. Just to get on a list says a player has an enormous amount of ability. My son played with Damian Cupido and against Sam Mitchell at junior level. Both made it to the big time. Cupido was clearly the better footballer at that level but unfortunately his application wasn't there. He is still playing suburban footy and nothing has changed. Lazy and overweight but still immensely talented. Mitchell was a standout who has had the right attitude.

^^ Top post Nico, reminds me of an old thread on here some time ago, "Is talent overrated" I think it was called. Think it arose in the context of a discussion about Nick Davis and the importance of talent and application (Not to name names, but ROK Lobster and/or Stella might have been involved).

Agree with both of you. But my take on jesse is that he has it all, and he does work hard and he has the desire, no doubt about it, but the problem is the "it" factor. Some guys have all the package and application, but the "it" factor just doesn't work. I hope the lad finds it this year, I really do.
