According to the AFL website, Trade Whispers, Swans are looking to bundle of more than one player, including Nick Smith is a possibility to either Melbourne or St.Kilda for a top 5 draft pick. Be highly annoyed if this were to happen

Me thinks they have found out Nick Smith is a Victorian and therefore wants to go back there. Nothing of substance in the article at all.

I would also be sad if Nick is gone, but as it was mentioned earlier, we would loose him if he wants to go back to his family in Melbourne.

Interesting to note re Nick Smith. If he wants to live in Melbourne as much as Buddy wants to live in Bondi, we should get a deal done. He is pound for pound the strongest defender in the competition, but wants midfield exposure, which a Melbourne or St Kilda will be able to give him! The deal would have to be good for the Swans!

Perhaps the media are really pissed off that they never got a sniff of the Buddy trade and are just writing anything at all with little regard for facts....oh that's right that's just normal.

I hope it is just made up nonsense. Smith has always indicated he is very happy in Sydney and he is in the leadership group. He's also the youngest, truly established member of a defence that is going to see a few players retire over the next two years or so. He'd be close to the last player I'd be looking to trade out.

Last year the Swans were adamant that they weren't going to trade out any premiership players for Tippett. Not sure why they would suddenly be looking for a fire sale when last year's results (taking into account injury), the successful resigning of Parker, Jetta and the like, and the recruitment of Buddy all point to us being very much a contender in the near term. Since when did the Swans go chasing a top 5 pick just for the sake of it?

TWR saying Carlton looking at Jesse but Hampson not in the deal. Hampson's manager to come on shortly.
Nothing like a good light bulb moment.

Everything I have heard about Smith is that he now loves it in Sydney after a bumpy start. However, he was one of the players originally unhappy about the Tippett deal so in light of recent events, it wouldn't surprise me if he wants out. McGlynn asking to be traded would be no shock either and I'm hoping Kennedy doesn't follow suit. Despite the players code, those two could have warned Ireland if he had trusted them enough to ask.

                    Franklin is our Rubicon.

Academy bidding has come and gone and only Brisbane have committed to Jonathan Freeman.

Very uneventful so far. It looks to me that the clubs will take their time before any of the trades will be completed. They have it until 25th to do so.

I hope the Nick Smith talk has no substance whatsoever. However he did say very recently that he would like to play in the midfield if the opportunity arose. I was at a game in Launceston v Hawks when he had a run in the midfield, I can't remember the context I think after an injury to someone. He was amazing, he along with Goodesy helped change the flow of the game. I wondered at the time if it was because it surprised the Hawks and he didn't seem to have a matchup for some time. Even so he showed that he has the ability.

From his point of view he may need a new challenge. On reflection who would want to spend their entire playing career in the back pocket where you get very little recognition as a player by way of Brownlow votes etc. no matter how well you play. Maybe the Swans need to groom someone else to be a shut-down-the-slippery-small-forwards player to switch roles with him from time to time!

Despite the shock/delight of picking up Franklin, I'm concerned what our trading strategy is this year. Here's some analysis on our list.

Most clubs run a full senior list of 40 players, in 2013 we only ran with 38. So from that already thin list of 38 we have 3 retirements in Jude, Mattner and Morton, one delisting Brown, one departure Mumford, one definite trade out White, leaves us 32. Franklin in, and going by the fact Perris was only rookie listed there will only be one upgrade, Rampe. That makes our senior list 34. So where are the other 4 coming from to get our senior list up to the minimum 38?

Our ND picks currently look like 15, (28 for Jesse?) 34, 53 and the next is so far out into the twilight zone I doubt we would use it.

The danger is that we trade out further players as I don't know how we will replace them, hmmmm ....................

So to trade out any more players seems fraught with danger to me.

Our senior list may go down to 32 with successful trades of Mumford and White. It may go down to 30 if Ben McGlynn and Andre Everette can find new homes!

We will have to go from 30 - 38 players if this scenario eventuates. Perris has agreed to be a Rookie so he won't be counted on the main list. Lance Franklin addition makes 31. We may take as least 4 in the Nab Draft (What picks depends on the trades we make). That will give us 35. We can then upgrade Rampe, Biggs and Brandon Jack to
give us 38 senior players! The rookie list will be superb with Richards, Naismith, Perris and Jack Loyd able to be ungraded to cover injuries.

A lot of next year will depend on players like Towers, Brad Dick and Tim Membery playing good senior football when they get the opportunity!
