Thought we might deal with cats for a ruckman many months ago, still dont think we can afford to let Smith go though, give the cats Armstrong or Everitt or both but no Smith please. At least the Varcoe trade rumours have died he isnt in the same class as Smith.

Can't see West agreeing to join us ostensibly as a backup ruck who will only play in case of injury or suspension to Pyke.Comment

Jesse's agent confirms Collingwood is the only destination for him, and the swans aren't shopping him elsewhere. Both clubs being reasonable, and a late 2nd to early 3rd round pick expected.
I love the way this club operates at trade time. Seem to always get players who leave to their club of choice without holding the other club at ransom.
Just look at essendon for the polar opposite.Ed Considine's day out - Round 3, 16th April 1995.
11 Kicks, 13 Handballs, 8 Marks, 1 Goal, 1 Behind, 1 Tackle, 1 Hitout, 3 Brownlow votes (his only votes)

Hearing Smith to Geelong for Trent West and pick 15....
I rate him but if we are to trade him then I feel that would be about as good as we could expect to get.
I reckon we are going to see one player leave that we would really like to keep and I fear it may be Smith.
Bundle Adreijs and Mummy up with GWS for a swap from pick 49 to 35 and we have four top 40 draft picks (14,15,31,35) before free agency compo plus we have the biggest hole on our list (a first ruckman) solved. And add in Perris who is rated a potential top 20 pick.
You can't stand still and rest on your laurels and those five picks could well uncover some real talent....Comment

Haven't seen much of West, he's injured a lot isn't he ? I must admit seeing a piece of play this season or last though where he kicked a very impressive long running goal. I was suprised at his mobility for a guy that size.Comment

Smith for West & pick 15. I think it's a good deal. We can replace Smith with Biggs, Cunningham or someone else. Train them up over the preseason.
We would literally have no holes in our list, and nothing to worry about. Lose a premiership ruckman, gain a premiership ruckman and a high pick and whatever else we get for Mumford. Replace the trade bait with guys who are more than good enough to fill Smith's role."Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the Swans win pretty."Comment

I'd think West would be keen for a move and Geelong would like to trade. Excess of ruck stocks with some young guns in there. Last time we recruited a backup ruckman from them it turned out well.Comment

If would be great if we could get Everitte and Mumford to GWS for higher first and second round picks as we'll.
I would then back the Swans recruiting staff to recruit four very good young players who will develop into good senior players!Comment

But I don't fathom how anyone can conclude that we have guys floating around in our reserves who are good enough (at the moment) just to step in and replace Smith.
However, as Liz so rightly points out, if he is going, this is a good trade that fairly compensates his value.Comment

If we did lose Smith, I would be disappointed, but likewise feel we will find a more than adequate solution, even if I can't say at this moment what it would be.Comment

Of course quality players like Smith are difficult to replace, but other players do step up and fill the role vacated. We lost AJ and Mattner and up pops Rampe. Who would have thought that? And White really did step up when Reid went down.

And we'd be far more stuffed next year if Pyke did an ACL compared to Smith doing one."Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the Swans win pretty."Comment
