Dumb question related to one change: is there any reason the game is on a Thursday? Apart from seeing if it works?
Changes for Round 10 V Geelong

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time -
On a serious note I have no idea why this game is on a Thursday, good for TV but terrible for the fans who attend games.Comment

Scheduling on a Thursday gives Geelong 2 consecutive 6 day breaks. The following week we will have a 9 day break before travelling to the Gold Coast. Both significant advantages.
We need every advantage we can get to win these vital games. The COLA is not enough to get us another premiership. If we aren't gifted a few games with preferential scheduling, a Melbourne club could sneak in, like they did last year.
Thankfully we will also be able to land top draft pick Beau Heeney due to our academy concession, despite being handed the premiership on a silver platter.
All this will keep Mick Malthouse and Eddie McGuire whinging all the way to Christmas.Comment

I think membrey would be a good sub against the weaker sides, 4 kicks after half time will almost for sure be 4 goals, he just doesn't miss....that quality is gold when teams are tired. It might be a good way to bring him in when the 4th defender is tired....confidence and being in the big time will turn this kid into a training beast. Make Ryan his mentor and get him super fit. I'd hate to see him kicking goals somewhere else....maybe him and goodes can play half eachComment

News.com has an article saying a few clubs are eyeing off Membrey and Towers as recruits at the end of the year. Saying not getting a look in with usYou don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby ZieglerComment

I hate that the game is on a Thursday. If it had of been Friday Night, or even better Saturday arvo, I think its close to a sell out. I expect a poor crowd on a Thursday night, and to make things worse, if the cats beat us, no doubt the geelong flog at work will play his stupid bear all day Friday and then all day Monday as well!"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I suspect the answer is that TV preferences trump fans. And I'm pleased to read the odd comment from Gillon McLachlan that the AFL may have gone too far down that path.He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. Despite the urbane polo player's protestations I suspect that Thursday nights are here to stay. It's the price to pay for an 18 team comp I guessComment

If we can get some senior games into them they will be more likely to stay. Senior games also increase there trade currency if they want to go.
I see Towers forming a lethal, fast running half back line with Rohan, Rampe and potentially Aliir over the next three seasons to cover the Shaw, Malceski and Richards retirements.
Membrey will be able to cover the Adam Goodes retirement or the possible move off Sam Reid to defence.Comment

Interesting article. It may be a position that Towers and Membrey are considering. We need to get some senior games into them.

Realistically if they both not good enough to get a game in two years then they are without doubt expendable and better off to search for greener pastures. Membrey you'd think will get another offer as he seems to have some potential whereas Towers being 25 next year is running our of time. Clearly if either get their opportunity hey need to seize it with both hands
By my reckoning these guys would be lucky to be in our Top 30 - harsh on them and they are a victim of our depth and good run with injuriesComment

My understanding is that we'll get nothing from them - we'll either re-sign them or de-list them.

If we don't delist them before the trade period then other clubs can trade with us to get them (Jesse White)
If no trade deal is done then they can either sign on for us or go into the preseason draft (Tippett, ROK in late 2008.
I don't think Towers and Membrey will become delisted free agents if there is a possibility we can get something at the trade table for them. This is good business.Comment

If we get some games into them, and they perform well, their asking price for their next contract will go up substantially.
Which would likely leave us to compete with teams offering more money, more opportunity.
I think the Swans will struggle to hold onto everyone they want at years end.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

You've got a catch 22 here.

It's how the Swans got their hands on Craig Bolton and Josh Kennedy. And we practically gave away Sean Dempster because the coaches didn't think he'd get many immediate opportunities in the senior team and the club was willing (more than that, encouraged him) to seek opportunities at a club where he might. All three went on to become all Australians at their second clubs.
And while Everitt and White will almost certainly not quite reach AA heights during their career, they're playing good senior football at the moment at another club, and the Swans couldn't afford to try and hold onto them last year just to be the 24th or 25th ranked players on the list and spend most of their time in the NEAFL.Comment

Agree with you Matt80 and was kinda my point re membrey. He will always be a 3rd or 4th forward and therefore needs to have another side to his game otherwise he will look very ordinary at AFL level when hes not kicking goals.
But we are definitely going to be open to picking off . If you were looking at building your team going forward, I would let Towers go before Membrey but if I was an opposition club , I would have my feelers out for Lloyd.Comment

I think Lloyd works so far because he has great targets to kick too in Franklin, Tip, Goodes, Reid etc............ie at Melbourne FC ....Lloyd right now... at only 19yrs of age? and slightly smaller may struggle to help their cause
ie tom mitchell would win more ball against big bodied opposition midfielders which at snr level is generally more important ......so you could argue that Tom Mitchell would be mucg more successful at most other clubs right now then Lloyd ---- ignoring injuries etc !
BUT at the moment at the Swans ..........an inclusion of an outside player that is a calm above average decision maker who hits targets is more important for us the last few weeks
Lets see how Tommy goes the next few games"be tough, only when it gets tough"
