There are many examples of where clubs have done deals where they didn't have to. I only expect we will get something like a 4th rd pick for him, if we do get anything. We have a pretty good trading relationship with Saints, so I doubt that they will necessarily jeapordise that either."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Pelchen is a bit of a @@@@@ but you don't want to burn bridges and they probably want to hav PSD pick 1 up their sleeve for a player who is out of contract and in dispute with their club, like Howlett from the Bombers.Comment

Off
ROK
LRT
Dick
Walsh
Membrey
Lockyer
Malceski?
On
Heeney
Hiscox
Davis
Richards
Lloyd (?)
So six off, maybe seven (Mal). Five already committed to, with the futures of Naismith, Robinson and Biggs still up in the air. Hardly seems worth the Swans sending a delegation to draft night.Comment

What fool would give something up something for Membrey if they don't have too?
There are three reasons why the Saints would trade for Membey.
- A more complex deal is in the works.
- A better player will be taken in the PSD.
- The Saints are secretly talking to another un contracted Swans player and a planning to do a GWS on usComment

I completely agree. From what I've seen of them I really have no issue with committing those picks to those kids.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

If you don't have a better prospect for your 4th round pick why wouldn't the Saint give it up in the interests of locking up the deal? Their alternative first pick in the PSD doesn't necessarily have to be better than Membrey but he could be someone who is no longer available when the second round comes. A bird in the hand etc etc...

By the way: smart career move by Membrey. He'll get plenty of senior time up forward over the next few years, particularly when Reiwoldt retires.Comment

The best we could hope for Membrey would be an exchange of 3rd round picks (around 40). We don't have a need for another low round pick. We wouldn't use a 4th rounder anyway. We still need a senior slot to upgrade Biggs, unless we plan to let him go. We still could expand the primary list beyond the 38, but this seems unlikely.
Freo's bid for Hiscox seems more vexatious than sincere. If we had a president like Eddie McGuire, we would have 'hid' him and not let him compete in the combine. If we hadn't nominated him, he would have not have been drafted. He wasn't on anyone's radar.
I don't find anything wrong with delisting and redrafting AJ as a rookie. It wouldn't change his rehab program or playing future, but would open another primary list slot if necessary.Last edited by Ludwig; 6 October 2014, 10:38 AM.Comment

Furthermore, do you really think it is ethical for the Swans to be hiding players? Regardless of the reasons why the academies are important for development, they do represent an advantage to the clubs that have them. Misusing the privilege on top of even having the privilege would be a major compromise of the system, and something I hope the club would never contemplate.
Hiscox played in all the U18 NSW champs games, and has also been a regular in our NEAFL side. Plenty of scouts would have had a chance to look at him. His range of athletic attributes is impressive. And while he's got a fair amount to learn about the football side of things, he does know how to use the ball too, regularly slotting multiple goals for our NEAFL side. He is significantly further ahead than, say, BJ was when he was drafted (and yes, a year older too).Comment

Yes. It's unethical, which is why I said we would have hid him if Eddie were our president. He could have gone to the combine with sore knee syndrome. I am not seriously suggesting this. But I do think Freo's bid was vexatious, and I doubt he would have been drafted in the first 3 rounds if we didn't nominate him.Comment

Swans have to show the commitment to the academy and would have matched 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks to get all players. Two reasons, if shown that they only want diamonds, Heeney comes in but, shiny pebbles, Hiscox and Davis goes somewhere else then the AFL will scrubbed the academies picks as the clubs only wants immediate guns. Swans showed that they are totally committed. Secondly another diamond is coming, Callum Mills, I only saw one game and Mills is very very good and maybe Dunkley, Father and Son pick next year. If the AFL punish academy clubs then AFL in the north states then starts to slowly die as the clubs dropped out of the academies and the playing level drops down again. Swans would do the some thing next year and nominate and match all selected players but whingeing Eddie has all the money and all the profile to drive his own agenda.Comment
