I think this would just be a 'better than nothing deal'

We've always dealt well with the Saints so they'll want it done as a trade, rather than getting him in the PSD

That 1st pick in the PSD is very valuable. It effectively gives that club the right to get a very good out of contract player for nothing in draft pick terms. With O'Rourke and Jaksch still in play, the Saints have some inducement to do a fair trade. But I still don't expect anything that substantial.

I also think that the Malceski decision may hold a key for the future of Shane Biggs. If Malceski stays, I think it would mean that Biggs will not get many playing opportunities and is likely to go. But if Malceski leaves, it's a good chance that Biggs will get a senior contract.

SEN reporting that Biggs has requested a trade back to Victoria.

Similar boat to Membrey, if this is true we'll get next to nothing for him.

Don't think it's a huge loss but unlike the Goodes/Membrey situation you'd have to think this is a direct result of Shaw playing on. Personally, I'd prefer to keep Biggs and have Rhyce retire.

Wonder if this also might mean that Mal is staying?

Do the same trade rules apply for rookies?

Yes if Melcho takes theGCS deal Biggs has a spot and we should keep him.

If not he would be a top pick up for a cluns like St kilda

It may be an opportunity to get that pick 59 to work a bit harder.

It may allow an upgrade for Naismith.

Gee, I just don't like the smell of all this.

IMO, the Swans need to do a bit of recalibrating /reinvigorating of the list this off season.

Goodes and Shaw, following LRT and O'Keefe into retirement, would of given the Swans that opportunity.

Instead, the Swans have Goodes and Shaw playing out the final year of their fading careers, at the expense of 2 young, potentially good, AFL players with plenty of upside.

There's no point in having depth if we end up just training these guys, then letting them slip through our fingers.

IMO, the Swans should of been less sentimental on this, and made the hard decisions....Like Geelong did with Pods and Chappy, and Hawks did with Sewell.

Biggs doesn't even have a spot on the senior list at the moment. None of us knows if he's been offered one, even. Or do we? For me he is handy depth but not much more. Even if Malceski leaves, I can't see Biggs automatically taking his spot. Indeed, I think we'll see McVeigh move almost permanently down to the backline, freeing up a spot in the middle for a Mitchell, Hewett or Heeney. And I see Jones as the one most likely to push Shaw out the team, not Biggs.

And the cat coach admits they pulled the trigger a year too early and it probably cost them!

                        I think this is right.

If Reid moves to defence, even without Shaw and Mal, we could have Rampe, Smith, Macca and Rowan make up a back 7, with Jones and even Heeney knocking on the door.

This topic has been raised before: There's a limit to how much depth you can have, because fringe players good enough to get starting roles on other teams are not going to stick around forever.

Malceski is heading to the GC, told the club this afternoon according to the HS.

Very sad day for me as a fan, I've watched him from reserves to seniors to AA this year, never imagined him playing for another club.

FWIW I think there was a definite strategic move to select all of the boys this year.
Great comment and spot on. This is the shifting frame of reference that that fat [politeness prevents me from saying it] McGuire runs on us - we have an unfair advantage which makes us a privileged bunch to be feared AND we are also a pathetic club that can't hang on to homegrown talent and doesn't deserve the privilege. He was literally this contradictory in the one interview a few months back when Heeney's name was first mentioned in the mainstream. According to the fat [politeness prevents me etc etc], we had an armchair ride with the Academy but we were also apparently useless because we couldn't hang on to Jarrod Witts. The Melbourne media are far too terrified of Eddie to point out these glaring contradictions in the crap he talks. If they did, Eddie would do his usual trick of savaging the critic in a vicious and personal attack and then saying words to the effect of "Just kidding - he/she is a ripping bloke and we're just having some fun". By the way, I think Eddie is a ripping bloke and I know he likes a laugh. All my comments about him being a fat [politeness prevents me etc etc] are just good natured ribbing (not that his ribs are discernible these days because he's a fat [politeness prevents me etc etc] .... but that's just a good natured joke too, Eddie. We really love you).
My opinion is objective truth in its purest form
