I reckon Goodesy is dead keen to play a final season with a decent pre-season under his belt. I know we've all noted it during the year but he actually made mention last night of how much practice he has done at kicking with his left foot. He clearly still thinks he has more to give and that's fine with me.

Someone looked up the rules earlier in the thread and there's nothing in them to say you can't have more than one 3rd year rookie. :-)"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

Goodes to win a third Brownlow!I wasn't being critical of our decision to retain Goodes and Shaw. I was only pointing out differences in list management strategy between us and clubs like Hawthorn and Geelong. (I do agree that Goodes is in a special class and not in the Sewell category). The comments about Goodes' and Shaw's deficiencies have come largely from the RWO community. I have rarely, if ever, made negative comments about them in this regard.
In another post I pointed out that I suspected that the Membrey decision was made without regard to Goodes playing on and it seemed apparent that we had chosen Towers ahead of him for the next forward spot. I read that Goodes is having stem cell therapy and other treatment for his knee, and it wouldn't surprise me if he returned next year to win a third Brownlow. I also speculated that letting Shaw play on may be a loyalty statement for the benefit of Malceski; we will have to see about that one. I would be thrilled to have Shaw on our list in an ROK type role next year.
The club has been reticent about its 2015 plans (except to improve), so I have had a number of posts speculating about strategies going forward. I am wondering how we will approach this particular draft, which is one that seems to have a good number of quality KPPs, and in particular key defenders, something we are a bit light on atm.
I have the highest regard for the club management and trust they will come up with the right solution. For the supporters, it's just finding a way to manage this period of deafening silence. Some are suffering from PTSD. Maybe I'm one of them.
I'm backing Shaw and Heeney to be All-Australian, Hiscox to win the rising star award and Tom D to be the Norm Smith Medalist.Comment

The recent revelation that Goodes had a new stem cell treatment for his knee injury might be a bit of a guide as to why Goodes has decided to play on.Gibbs stated that Goodes would have retired at the end of 2013 if not for the treatment being available. It seems however that his knee continues to improve and he could actually be a better player in 2015 than in 2014.(It also seemed to me watching him that he seemed more capable towards the end of the year, not the sort of thing you expects with a degenerative knee condition having not missed a game). The beneficial effects are expected to take a full 2 years to kick in completely on average and Goodes only had the procedure in (I think) Feb this year. Goodes also wants to have an additional treatment to further improve the knee.
Apparently the treatment also saved Mike Pyke's career as he was playing with what would normally be a career ending knee injury in 2013.
This treatment could be a game changer (literally) for many sports and the longevity of older players with cartilage issues. It may also mean that the ability to keep players for longer has been integrated with the decisions about Shaw and even Buddy's long term contract.
In the circumstances I don't blame the players for wanting to play on (especially, in Shaw's case if we are to lose Malceski). Dual Brownlow medallists don't grow on trees and we know that Goodes pace has not dropped off. Hopefully the ability to twist and turn will also return and we will have a "new player".We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

The two aren't mutually exclusive. There is no reason to believe that the club isn't managing its list in precisely the way it believes is best - both for the short and the medium term.Comment

I agree.
But don't see too much of a problem, as long as Horse is willing to send them to Canberra if they are not performing, and both are accepting if that happens.
Both would be wonderful mentors to the younger guys.
Having said that, I can imagine Shaw in this role, and doing it really well.
Not so sure about Goodsey playing in the 2's, from both player and club view point.
If Goodsey isn't performing, I imagine he'd retire mid season...Which would mean a wasted list spot, so hopefully that doesn't eventuate.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Interesting reading about the stem cell treatment that Goodes is receiving. If he has a better year in 2015, then he will be playing in 2016. If he plays in 2016 he will start looking at catching Michael Tuck. Could he keep going like Fletcher and Harvey?I agree.

I hadn't seen the story of the stem cell treatment. Startling news, good for Goodsey and sweet for the Swans. Also for Pykey. He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

"The cutting-edge treatment involves taking stem cells from around abdominal fat and injecting it into the damaged knee. The articular cartilage then regenerates itself.
In the past damaged knee cartilage has never been able to repair or grow again."
