Yep the Suns have confirmed that they've signed Nick for 3 years.

Very sad to see Mal go...it's just not going to be right seeing him in another club's jumper.

A 3 year 1.5m dollar contract should definitely be enough to get us at least a grade 2 compensation pick which would make it end of first round...either 20 or 21.

Hopefully Kinnear can weave some magic in which case I'll be even more eternally grateful to Mal.

        That may be so...

But I'm sure if you put the question to him..."Was moving on Chappy and Pods the right decision for Geelong in the medium to long term?"

The answer would be a resounding , "yes"!

Anyway, my point is more one of examples of other clubs making hard decisions, for their clubs' future, beyond 1 year.

As sad as it is to see Mal go, I genuinely believe one of the most exciting parts of being a supporter is seeing kids grow and develop and be given more games.

It will hurt us in the short-term but game time into the likes of Jones, Hewett, B.Jack, Towers, Heeney, Perris, Mitchell etc. can only bode well for the future.

            This, damn it.

My 8 y.o daughter will be devastated. She dressed as Nick (beard and all) at a school dress up day last year and ran around all day doing his post-THE GOAL celebration.

I'm pretty sad too, to be honest. This new era is hard - all the fun of a Buddy, but this is the flipside. Big Mummy was her other favourite. And mine too.

Mal's a fantastic player. He provided so much drive and always seemed to be there when needed in defence. He'll be a tremendous loss. But I would think that he was underpaid for many years, in part due to his knee problems, so can't blame him for cashing in for the sake of his family.

I don't think we can expect a 2nd tier compo pick. Dal Santo was 29 last year and went to NM on a 3 year deal. The Saints got a tier 3, second round, pick. So I think we are looking at a pick 40.

Given the complete lack of transparency in the compensation process, the pick could be anything. The AFL might decide to "punish" us for recruiting the highest profile free agent yet a year ago, and ramp down the compensation they award. It is worth noting that Carlton have been given nothing for Waite. Not even a 3rd rounder.

Geez, shocked and sad to hear about Mal.

Leaves a massive hole in our defence. Getting worried about our defence now. Mr. Reliable is gone...good luck Mal.

I'm so sad but good luck to Mal and his family. And yes, it opens up some exciting opportunities for at least one young talented Swan.

If we don't get at least an end of 2nd rounder, then I can only assume that Eddie McGuire IS the compensation committee.

If we can package up Membrey, Biggs and pick 59 to STK for pick 22 and get around pick 40 for Mal, plus Heeney, Hiscox and Davis, it will be a pretty good ND.

Deep down I think I knew that he was going to leave but I was hoping he would stay. Will always remember him for kicking THAT goal! It is a sad day ????.

Surely if the demons received a 1st round compensation pick for Frawley then so should we. Frawley has nothing on Mal.

"His (Malceski's) manager Ben Niall said on Monday that the Swans had accepted his decision with class."

?It is been an emotional day for Nick, telling his coach was really difficult, but they have been really understanding and respectful and supportive."

Nick Malceski joins Gold Coast Suns on three-year deal from Sydney Swans as unrestricted free agent

As are we the Swans' supporters (understanding, respectful, supportive). Unlike the sheer vindictiveness shown to Lance Franklin by Hawthorn supporters.

Sad to see Mal go. Free agency has been good to us, but to see a player like Mal, with all his ups and downs, not end up a one club player... Rationally I can deal, but sentimentally I hoped he would have stayed with us.

Will he be accorded the same respect as Schneider and Dempster - departing premiership players whom we never boo?
