If we knew this last week then it does make me wonder why we didn't give Mal that contract.

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time -
ive had a mind blank
what are our significant picks again ?
39 and 55 ?
plus whatever we get if at all for Membrey ?
with this embargo should we have convinced Membrey to stay or is Gary and Reid playing more up front in 2015 ?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

We tried but we couldn't match the third year. In 2017 we will have no COLA and no vet allowance, we will be trying to keep existing quality players when COLA comes off their contracts, and Franklin's contract becomes much more expensive in nominal terms (according to reports).Comment

Folks, for discussion about the AFL's trade ban, please go here, where all of your posts have been safely relocated. AFL slaps trade ban on Swans - Page 10
All trade () and draft talk can continue here.
Captain, I am detecting large quantities of win in this sectorComment

I read here...No Cookies | dailytelegraph.com.au
That we were interested in Patfull, and were warned off...
I thought he was just the player we could of used to bolster our defence....And probably cost less than Mal....
This arrangement really is unfair.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

The arrangement is an absolute joke.
This thread is going to be boring now...."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Agreed, but it will end the hysteria of trading out what will contend for minor premiership next year as one of the best 3 clubs in the leagueStaying ahead of the game...Comment

Probably not really the best option but what does anyone think about us picking up the DE-LISTED Jarrod Petrenko. Only 24 and has had some injuries but could possibly play a role that we have lacked in of late and that is a genuine small forward who also puts on fantastic defensive pressure. I read he is keen to play on and I know we are tight for list positions but I wouldn't be overly disappointed if we gave him a chance!Comment

I'm surprised all of Red and White has backed the plan to hold onto all players in light of the ban to bring in established players from other clubs.
The other plan I proposed was letting go of some established players and going hard in the draft.
We have Heeney now and will most likely pick up highly rated juniors Mills and Dunkley at the end of 2015.
This is a great crop and why not double the crop now. This strategy will reduce our cap, allow us to front end existing contracts and give us free agency fire power when the ban is lifted.
The strategy may make us a 5-8 team for the next two seasons but we will be far stronger in the latter part of the decade. Even if we are a 5-8 team, I can see Buddy, Tippett, Kennedy and Parker maybe dragging us into a GF.
Trading out some players now will also allow us the opportunity to get senior football into some great young prospects and have them ready to impact the competition when we get free agency back.
This is what I would do:
- Trade Hanners for the number one pick. This will most probably net us Petraccca.
- Trade Craig Bird for an early 2nd round.
- Get a third round upgrade for Membrey and maybe a couple of spots for Biggs.
We go to the draft with picks:
- 1
- 20-25
- 39
- 40
We get four more draftees to go with Hiscox, Heeney and Davis and we start developing them in the seniors.
It's like the Brisbane Lions strategy, but we have better senior players around the youth and will be more competitive.
By 2017-2018, these young players will be very ready to impact the competition, not to mention the cap room we will now have.
Is this strategy so awful in the circumstances. Sometimes in war and in life you need to tread water, be patient, wait for reinforcements to arrive and then attack when you are strategically strong.Comment

Don't agree, I think our window is open now.
Our players should be highly motivated after what happened in the GF. We should be going all out to win the flag next year.
The only circumstance I would consider trading Hannebery would be if the club felt he wanted to go back to Melbourne. ie Get something while we can.
As free agency blossoms, I think clubs start offering contract extensions to players with a year to run on their contract.
If the player baulks they will then trade them while they still offer the club currency.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

You would normally do a list clear out after a poor season Matt, not after one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history. We are contenders, why would we want a no 1 pick who may be a star and may help us win a flag in 5 years, in exchange for an established star who will be trying his guys out to win one next year? Make hay while the sun shines, your suggestion is the most ridiculous thing you've posted on here, and that's saying something.Comment
