I know the ruck role is over-rated by many, but we would be asking for trouble in my opinion if we went in with Tippett, the two inexperienced ruckmen in Naismith and Nankervis and Derricx as the total of our ruck stocks for 2016.
That will work. Its time for Nankervis or Naismith to step up. Give them opportunity to grow. They have both been on the list for a while.

We are a 5-8 side next year. It's going to be like our 2010 and 2011 years. Lets save some money, front end some contracts and bring Naismith, Hewitt, Heeney, B.Jack and Mills along.

Ruckman is first priority in my eyes, then small forward then running half back.

We don't need a key defender as desperately as some people think. Teds got at least one more year, Grundy is under rated as we all know and Rampe will have another pre season under him.

Also, we have backup with Sam Reid who's really starting to play great football, before that injury. X. Richards looked good in the game he played this year so there's some more depth for that position.

So, Ruckman and if we could get a running half back that would be sweet. Otherwise as I said, Rampe has another pre season in him, same as Jones.

Definitely need a smart small forward, even Suckling could fill that spot!

A healthy McGlynn and a HBF that can release McVeigh Forward, also K Jack is good to go froward with his goal assists.
McGlynn was a massive loss for us this year
I really hope Kirky mixing up the midfield mix, we should have half the team going thru there other than just 5 guys
Even Goodes begged to be in their all year and look what happened when they finally put him in, id throw Rohan in there for 5 mins a Qtr

If our reserve rucks were game ready we wouldn't be having this discussion.
I sure hope it's not going to be Tipoff in the ruck, with others backing him up.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Lloyd has been disappointing, i rate him but he was Mr Clean Hands a few years back and was good in big games despite his experience but those 2 qualities left him this year

With Jones/Cunningham coming through i wonder if he is surplus
LLoyd has only played 2 seasons of senior footy.

Why do we need a small forward. Rose seemed to leap to the top in that department late in the season. McGlynn has been our point kicking small forward for a while now. I don't know that a small kicking forward is in our genetic makeup.

I am with Ludwig on the rucks. I don't get the preoccupation/paranoia around having to recruit a ruck. Why recruit one if they are no good. To me Zac Smith is ordinary at best, Leuanberger is always injured and Simpson is in the hack squad. Sinclair is 26 but the consensus seems that we can make a silk purse from a sows ear with him. Unless Sinclair can kick 30 to 40 goals then leave him alone, and that doesn't work with most 2nd resting rucks, but it seems to be done to death by the media. Naismith and Nankervis have been developing but many seem to think they should be left languish in the 2's.

I understand where you're coming from. Our ruck situation didn't quite work out as well as it might have due to Pyke's injury. But all clubs (except Hawthorn), are faced with weaknesses in their lists that sometimes have to be filled with players that you wished had a bit more time to develop in the lower leagues. Of the ruckmen whose names have been raised as possible recruits, only Leuenberger is experienced enough where perhaps one pre-season with us would allow him to make an impact in his first year. The others would probably struggle until they got used to how we operate.

We just may have to face to fact that we are in a situation where we have a couple of young ruckmen who will have to do some of their development in the seniors before they are at a level we would like. I don't see a problem playing Tippo as our first ruck. He played his best footy late in the year when this was his role. He's a better ruckman than Leuenberger or Zac Smith, because he's the most dangerous ruckman in the league going forward. So why not play him in this position? I quite like the look of Buddy and Reid playing as our key forwards, with Tippo drifting forward when we are in possession. To me it looks like one of the most dangerous forward setups going around.

I see Tippett giving us the ability to break in Naismith and Nankervis next year while taking the main ruck responsibility during this phase. There are other options that we could also work on the coming season, including developing Abe Davis as a forward who can take a turn in the ruck and developing Aliir in a ruck role, a position he has previously played as a junior.

We played most of year with Pyke either out of action or more of a liability on the field when he did play, and we still managed to win 16 games. With six months ahead of us to plan for next season, we should be able to work out an effective game plan that doesn't include him.

All the talk on here of going after Watts leaves me bemused.

He's been tried in different positions, and has been nothing but ordinary in all of them for many years now...

He's a poor mans Andrejs Everitt for mine.

Tippo's contract finishes next year are we in talks to extend it? or are we going to let him go and hope Naismith can get his body right and play a similar role to Tippet this year

He was taken pick one for a reason he's got skill, plus melbourne isn't the greated place to play and develop as a young player

I think all the evidence so far would suggest he was taking at pick 1 for the wrong reason! He's not a complete spud, but he's never going to be a star. Just cannot add size to that frame to be true key position, and drifts in and out of games. Just when you think he's had a broken game ( albeit as a sweeper behind the ball or tall wingman) , he'll be a ghost the next week. Not saying he may not be a handy recruit, but I wouldn't give much up for him. A swap for bird would be fair, they know what they'd get from Craig which is solid but not spectacular, and we have a lucky dip as to what we would get from Jack.

Being a top pick guarantees nothing.

Secondly, long term players such as - Jones, Howe, Frawley, Grimes etc..And in the last few years - Brayshaw, Viney, Vince, Tyson, Salem, Hogan etc have all developed ok.

Watts has proven himself over a long period, some of it under Roos, to be a very ordinary player....We don't need him at the Swans.

As I said previously, IMO, Andrejs Everitt if a far better player...And we let him go even though he wanted to stay.

PAUL Seedsman is expected to decide his football future next week, with the Collingwood defender set to make a fresh start at North Melbourne, Adelaide or Gold Coast.

The Roos, Crows and Suns have been leading the chase for Seedsman in recent weeks, with all three clubs meeting with the 23-year-old.

AFL.com.au understands the Sydney Swans also expressed an interest in the defender ? and maintain that interest ? but are mindful they could have their hands full with other trade targets, most notably ruckmen Matthew Leuenberger and Callum Sinclair, and Hawks' key position player Ryan Schoenmakers.

Honestly i hope we aren't wasting time on Schoenmakers we can only him a deal like 3 year $1.5mil or he can go to Freo for a massive contract and get 700-800k where Freo will give their first round this year and second round next year...

Dempsey seems like he's staying at essendon we should go after Seedsman more aggressively

Seedsman has shown signs of being a good defender who could fill the gap left by Mal or Shaw. I wonder if he would like to come to the Harbour City? Apart from the Roos, the other options are interstate - why not the Swans!!

We should back XR and Aliir in to help Reg out after Ted retires. Note where Reg ended up in the Bob Skilton Medal - that was a bit of a shock - to me anyway.

Has Dan Currie set some sort of record. Been on a senior list for close to 10 years and played 5 games, at the most.
