Interesting that Melbourne has traded away their first round pick for 2016 as part of the GC deal. They must have something certain in mind and perhaps wouldn't risk getting landed with Mills if they really want something else. In addition, Clubs usually take it in turns raining on other's parade. Melbourne two years in a row would certainly tarnish Roosy's legacy. Altho he's not a great one to forgive and forget if he feels his God-like status is questioned.

It wasn't that nobody wanted Bird, it's just that nobody wanted to pay his salary.Twitter @cmdil

However, StKilda and Essendon have been sweating bullets for a week trying to get this deal over the line and after we come to 'mediate', both clubs are holding press conferences patting themselves on the back for the 'great deal' they have both stitched up. Certainly there is the occasional win/win trade when 2 clubs deal (hopefully the Jetta/Sinclair trade will be one), but if 2 out of 3 clubs are beside themselves with joy, you can bet the 3rd club has been bent over.
In summary, we came in to help 2 desperate clubs and managed to come out of it way way behind...Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

What is even happening? I eagerly anticipate Tom Harley's bull@@@@ explanation for this. 'We're not aggressively shopping Bird around' he said. Ha! This trade reeks of desperation to get rid of him.
We were the mediators of this Carlisle trade and in the end, we're the only ones who lose. Unbelievable.
For a grand total of 16 points, we let go a good depth player, when we held the best hand.
We did not have do anything, they had to make us a offer!
We could have just walk.
Really bad play, as now other clubs will just walk all over us.
If Mills is not bid for in the top ten, we could have pick up some really good players if we had some more points.

"The combined points from those picks (1177 points) mean the Swans will take more points to the draft to use on their academy prospect Callum Mills and potential father-son selection Josh Dunkley than they would have if they had hung on to selection No.14 (1161 points)".doof-doofComment

This is correct as we paid top dollar to keep him away from GWS with his last contract - given that he is not in our best 22 can't see what the drama is - we have looked after Bird with what I gather is an extended contract with Essendon and gained salary cap relief of some sort for ourselves - you can't keep everyone if you want to move forward !!Comment

Craig Bird played 6 games in 2015 SIX he's not worth a first round pick or a pick in the 30's pick 72 or what ever it is low for him I agree. What this trade shows is on the second last day of the trade period no one other then Essendon wanted Bird Melbourne didn't Bulldogs didn't, its either he goes to Essendon next year and maybe plays another two or three year of AFL or we delist him end of next year, remember Paul Bevan?
It was a win win Bird gets to play some senior footy next year we get some extra points and make some more salary cap space.
Post of the week. Whats the point of playing Bird in the 2's when he is good enough to play seniors with another club. we have an abundance of players in the calibre or Birdy. You Just Do Not Get a Better Grand Final Win Than ThatComment

If Melbourne bid pick 3 on Mills and we match then Melbourne will have had a win because Sydney will slide down the draft order meaning Melbourne will move up one position in each round. They can then use bids on Hopper, Kennedy etc. to further improve their position. That is a serious flaw in this points system.Comment

Totally agree. I can see why people are upset due to Bird being a great servant over the years but clearly his time in the Swans senior side was up and it was either get rid of him now while we can or pay his salary next year whilst he's playing NEAFL and hoping for an injury! No brainer for me...
It's just that for once we were in a position to use some leverage to actually get a reasonable deal from 2 clubs that were desperate for a third party to intervene and we end up getting bent over and the other 2 clubs are falling over themselves crowing what a great deal they have constructed.
