I've been thinking about Mitchell and why I don't mind so much if he moves on.
I think the answer is that he doesn't possess the hardness to replace Kennedy, Parker and Hanners.
    Heeney and Mills do.
I know there is a role for Mitchell moving forward, but you have to wonder if money is better spend elsewhere, on a tall KPD for instance
The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.

Even if Buddy took a cut, I think his salary value is still included in the TPP/cap, even if we don't pay him the actual money (otherwise you could recruit a player on huge $$ to out price opposition & then reduce the salary to ease cap pressure once you have your player

I dont like the idea of losing Mitchell but I think it would help with the one area I think could improve our Midfield - inside speed, we have the hardness and grunt I think we lack that explosive midfielder - speed and hard. Im not sure who would fit the bill but moving Mitchell on may give us the draft pick/ salary cap we need.

After last night's PF we need to keep Mitchell. His vision and hands inside and under huge pressure was really good. No one else on our team seems to have the time that Tom does.
He will not be easily replaced and will be missed if he goes.

Agreed, that ability to extract *and* dispose in what looks like no space is very rare and wonderful to watch.

I know this is a joke but we can't seriously expect other players, especially Buddy, to take a pay cut every time someone may leave for a better offer.

It is a fact of life that you may lose the odd player, after all I'm sure the Hawks would have liked to keep Buddy.

All I hope is we offer Tom as much as we can without compromising our ability to re-sign Mills, Heeney and JPK next year.

I just have a feeling we may not be able to afford him and if that is the case them so be it.

Fairfax article saying we have offered Mitchell a five year deal but also that industry experts reckon he is worth between 500k and 550k per year.

So we need to find another $120k? I'll ring the club and give them some names to offload to find the difference! Unless Tom has a super contract on offer like 5 x $700K, I'm sure we can find the extra to make it up to $500k at least.

If Mitchell is worth that much then if he does go we should expect very good compensation in a trade, like Richmond's pick 6! Hawks just can't get their hoped for deals done.

With the wonderful way our coaches and recruiting team have rejuvenated this squad, if they collaboratively think Mitchell is expendable, then I reckon I'll go along with them, they seem to have a pretty good idea of what they are doing.

There is vital information missing in all equations for contract negotiations at every club - the new total player payments figure.

It is rumored around an extra $1m plus yearly % increases (CPI, I guess).

I think the club has put an offer to him that will have some room for improvement.

There is meant to be a meeting next week so hoping everything becomes clearer then.

I'll back the club to make the correct decision.

The AFL won't let him take a pay cut.

I suspect he can take a pay cut (ie not paid as much) but the original contract value would remain included in the cap (same as if he retired early - my understanding is he stops getting paid, but his value in our cap remains)

but any other club it doesnt apply to if someone they have retires etc beforehand....
