2016 trading and drafting (merged thread)

It probably comes down to whether we use the last primary list spot for a DFA or a Marsh upgrade and are waiting to see the final list of available players before making a decision. I'm not sold on Shaun Edwards, but see him as the best of the lot as to suiting our needs. Everyone else just looks to be a reserves player without much upside. At least Edwards has some raw talent. The choice becomes taking a DFA and leaving Marsh on the rookie list, or upgrading Marsh and drafting a late round rookie.

Fitzpatrick would be a like for like replacement for Tom Derickx and would give Deano a reprieve from being my 2017 whipping boy, so I can see the logic in signing him up as a personal favour to me. It would add some humour to those boring NEAFL games, which will likely depart without Tom's occasional appearances to liven things up.

And a couple of remarks on DFA history:

For all the hoopla about how we lost getting Patfull because of the trading ban, he only managed to play 38 uninspiring games for GWS before retiring and will apparently still be taking up cap space next year. The trading ban did us a favour.

And thanks Mal for going to Gold Coast and gifting us James Rose. I thought Rose played well in 4 of the 5 senior games he played and had a very solid NEAFL season. He was one of our best in the GF. I think he's a good chance to make a solid run at a starting spot in the seniors next year.

Had we taken Patful it would have offset the DFA compo for losing Malceski. Patfull and Mal are gone, but James Rose is still here.

Great news about Marsh and Foote being upgraded. I think there's a lot of upside in both. Now just to add a few youngsters from the draft and we are away into preseason. Even though we've lost a few lads, I think our list can have another crack at a flag in 2017.

That's eight.

On four promoted rookies.

So currently 4 spots on the list of 38 (unless I missed a delisting/trade).

It also appears as if Murray, Melican and COR (who was on a two year international rookie contract in any case) will be retained on the rookie list.

Your feelings were right. So Marsh it is and probably no DFAs. We'll go into the draft with 4 live picks and keep the primary list at 38. I'm sure that a lot of these elevated rookies, plus Towers and AJ are on fairly low salaries and that is helping with the salary cap. It's difficult to see who will come off our list at the end of next year with McVeigh, BJ and Leonardis looking the most vulnerable at this time. Someone will have to be traded out.

We'll have 11 first or second year players on our list of 38 next year who I suspect are all on pretty much minimum wage.

Plus you'd think the likes BJ, Towers, Aliir, AJ, Heeney (until next year), Rose, Robbo are on a base salary closer to $100,000 a year than $200,000.

We run a top heavy pay structure that rewards our elite very well but you have earn that right. I suspect that the above bottom 18 of our list are on a combined salary of roughly $2m.

That leaves the remaining 18 to share the remaining $9.3m balance of the $11.3m TPP.

Tippett's salary must be a real issue but thankfully we only have Hewett, JPK and Jones to re-sign this year and you'd hope that the money freed up by Mitchell leaving (plus Nanka and Xav) will allow us this to happen quickly. And then by the time Tippett leaves us at 2018 we'll desperately need that salary for Mills, Hewett, Aliir etc etc.

Think we've done this to death. The only sense in doing this is if

(a) We are paying Tippo overs (which I suspect we are but we don't know the terms of his new deal); AND
(b) Another club will take on his contract in full.

Any trade would see us continuing to pay any overs unless we can find someone that needs him more than us - the only club I thought might be tempted to have a nibble was Gold Coast but they clearly weren't interested . I think he does a good job as a first ruckman that can go forward and I suspect we're stuck with him.

Mills, Papley, Allir and Naismith come off contract at the end of 2018 which is also the end of Tippett's deal so you'd hope we'll be OK there.

All things considered I think we have managed the Buddy/Tippett Cap squeeze well. Within a couple of years there'll be a number of players on Buddy's salary, if not more, so Buddy's impact alone shouldn't be a major issue

Yes, we don't get top ten picks very often (well, if you don't count Heeney, and possibly Mitchell). But I feel sure that whoever we bring in will make the grade.
I'm also getting optimistic about AJ returning. If he does come back, you could look at it as effectively increasing our list from 37 to 38. Or you could even look at it, as a bonus draft pick, in which we get to add, someone who once proved themselves to be one of the most promising defenders in the game.

I think we can wait for pick 49 for our ruckman pick.

Pick 47 Melbourne: It's their first pick in the draft and with Max Gawn, I think they will have other priorities, although as Ugg has pointed out 'Tony Olango and Gawn' has a catchy ring to it.

Pick 48 Carlton: It's their 3rd pick but have many to follow with lots of slots to fill. They run quite deep in the ruck position so this shouldn't be a priority. It's quite amazing how many players have gone and how many have come in and they still have so many crap players remaining on their list.

It's only 2 places but the 40s could be a good place to get another high quality player in this draft, particularly with an astute recruiter like KB.
