I imagine the category B rookie, if there is one, will be one of the academy boys.

Jake Brown is a possible Cat B rookie from our academy. Eddie McGuire has complained that we keep these academy kids under wraps. But the Swans have supplied a detailed video of Brown for the AFL website, so he has nothing to complain about.

Mind you, based on that video we're going to be a bit worried if the Swans select Jake Brown.

why not Logue is available at 9 leaves Callum Mills to be on baller (logue may be able to go onball latter) na say Jarrod berry at 19 who appears from reports to ooze class and leadership. I am only going on write ups. One scenario might be perryman at 9 with GWS forgoing their pick.

That makes sense to me, liz. I seem to recall KB saying a little while back that we wouldn't get another Irish player this year but maybe next year.

Would the Swans Academy players be eligible to be Category B rookies? I thought to be drafted as Cat. B the player had to be:

                      1. An international recruit, or
                      2. A player from an alternative sport who has not been registered in an Australian football competition for three years, or
                      3. A player who qualified under the Next Generation academy rules.

Would we have an academy player who met the 2nd criterion?

Also, I think clubs had to nominate their potential category B recruits by August 15 - although that might have only applied to the 3rd group, this article is a bit ambiguous.

                        isn't Callum Mills replacing Mitchell?

Heeney is already in the midfield ala last 5 games

I would think the hope is that Nic Newman would fill a spot in the back 6, or else it makes little sense to upgrade a 24 yo rookie to the senior list. He's been more impressive in the reserves than Harry Marsh, if that's any indication of where he might fit in. I expect that Nic, Harry and Laidler are all competing for one spot. There are other combinations, including ones with Talia or AJ, that would still see Mills moving into the midfield. Who we draft next week will also have an impact.

I am pretty sure any academy player we take as a rookie qualifies as a NSW zone pick.

And while zone picks don't have to come from our academies (eg Harry C a few years back, when the Giants weren't interested), we have nominated a long list of potential academy players (meaning we have the right to match a bid for them in the main draft). The list is pretty much the NEAFL U19 regulars from 2016 plus Jake Brown (who is still an U18).

Thanks Liz, very complicated! You're right though, it could explain why we nominated that long list of academy players - I was surprised at the time.
