I think we needed Aliir in that game for the very reason that he could have gone with Roughhead, but also because he could have offered the extra marking target in the forward line that we were missing wothout Rohan in the side. We got absolutely smashed in the air by their tall and mobile backline. What Foote offered compared to Aliir was totally beyond me.For a team that has gone 9-2 in the last 11 games and has the number 1 ranked defence in that time, I don't think the non-selection of Aliir has cost us in that regard.
The Roughead contested marks against Hannebery and Jones were an issue with the midfield not the defence. As shown on On The Couch, Roughead started the centre bounces on the wing and moved forward. The Hawthorn forwards were also well coached to vacate the forward 50 area leaving a genuine one-on-one contests on both occasions with no third man up to help our undersized player. Unless Aliir was playing on the wing I don't think he would have made a difference in these 2 goals. We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

I would have preferred Aliir for Foote not for the reason you've stated because I don't believe Aliir can play forward ATM. He would have provided run from the back half which we lacked a lot and it would have released mills to a hff.I think we needed Aliir in that game for the very reason that he could have gone with Roughhead, but also because he could have offered the extra marking target in the forward line that we were missing wothout Rohan in the side. McKenzie can't get a game in one of a depleted Gold Coast side who are one of the worst defences in the AFL. I doubt he would get a game with our much stronger backline. I'd rather give a go to a O'Riordan or Murray.Comment

I've split a number of posts off to a separate thread about the academy. You can find them here:

There are certainly some aspects to Sammy that IMO reduce his value somewhat and we should be thankful for that as if he was a consistent four quarter performer at his best (which is very good) there is no way we would be able to keep him.
And on that note I'll be a little worried if we don't hear anything re him signing on this weekComment

Luke Ryan got BOG for Freo yesterday and will probably get this weeks Rising Star. We were right into him last draft but were beaten to the punch by Freo.Comment

He was taken at pick 66, after Sydney had exhausted its quota of four picks in the ND. So I don't think we could have been that into him.
I read somewhere that it was believed that the Swans were into him because one of the scouts went to watch a lot of Coburg games, but that it was actually Robbie Fox that they were checking out.Comment

This makes a lot of sense. I commented at the time that I thought it would be a bad move to take Ryan, even if we rated him, because we have so much depth at HBF.He was taken at pick 66, after Sydney had exhausted its quota of four picks in the ND. So I don't think we could have been that into him.

There is going to be some more changing of the guard next couple of years. Quite a few players aged 30+: Kennedy, McVeigh, Jack, Reg, Tippett, and of course Franklin. Smith is 29, and Laidler and Sinclair are 28.
I am assuming Leonardis, Tahlia and BJ are also looking vulnerable for delisting/trade at the end of the season?Comment
