    Knightmare's latest write up

Knightmare AFL Draft Wrap Hunter Clark might be first round pick

Will be interesting to see what happens with Fogarty after a poor championship n out for the season. I've seen Naughton a couple times now n he's a legit attacking chb in the mould of rance by the end of the year if form continues I'd be surprised if he wasn't a first rounder. Has a frame that looks like it would develop perfectly for a key back.

        I agree.

My point wasn't that Aliir is worth a first round pick outright because clearly that would be an over-valuation. But what about where we get a first round pick and give up our second rounder or third rounder?

My point is that every player has a value, and therefore every player is tradeable at the right price. And players under contract hold their value a lot more than a player out of contract. So, given we don't seem to need to trade anyone out to acquire picks or clear cap space we are in a position now where if we were to trade out any players that it would have to be a clear win for us on our terms.

FWIW I'd be happy to not trade anyone and just take our draft picks as they fall if we get Reid across the line

Interesting stats on the invitations to the national combine, 54 of the 83 attendees are from Victoria. Evan allowing for some Victorian bias it illustrates the power of the TAC Cup and for all the musings that there are too many Victorian teams the representation of players doesn't not reflect that.

Also interesting not a single Swans Academy player has been invited as opposed to four from GWS, two from the Lions and one from the Gold Coast. Seems strange given we went undefeated but happy for our lads to slip down the order. Makes a mockery of Three Chins' assertions that the Academy system will ruin the game and also an indication of the work still to be done.

Also see that Marsh's brother is still going well in the WAFL. wonder if we'd be tempted to have a nibble there

It's a nomination system. Just means there wasn't enough nominations for our academy players. They need to be nominated by atleast four clubs to get nominated. McGuire's has only one interest at heart n that's Collingwood n I think the majority of the public have finally worked that out. In regards to Jono Marsh it'd be tempting but we have a few that plays his hb role. Maybe if Aliir was traded, which I don't think he will be. Also depends how his mental state is because that's why he moved back home.

Crazy statement given we are 10-2 with the meanest defence in the league at the moment.

Jonathon Marsh (194cm fwd is a hole in our list) left Collingwood because he was homesick. Has a lot of talent and might not be so homesick now he's a couple of years older. Could be tempted to join Harry or stay at home with WCE or Freo?

Let's not forget how exciting Aliir was last year. Champion Data had him rated at the top end of "Above Average", almost elite for a KPD after just a dozen games. Aliir is the obvious replacement for Reg and is ready to go. He has a contract for next year and I can't see any other team offering us enough to part ways.

At AFL level jono marsh is a rebounding third up defender. Played in the key defensive positions at chb or fb against the likes of Ben brown, walker etc n he'll get murdered. IMO Aliir is not a stoppage key defender in the mould of Grundy but a third up more in the mould of Gibson. His one on one work can be pretty bad at times but his positioning for a third up or rebound is very very good. As for a trade imo if offered one of Richmond two first rounders I'd take. As for the Richmond caller on sen I think well it's sen who takes it seriously. Ffs they call Terry Wallace the list manager bwahaha

The Roughead contested marks against Hannebery and Jones were an issue with the midfield not the defence. As shown on On The Couch, Roughead started the centre bounces on the wing and moved forward. The Hawthorn forwards were also well coached to vacate the forward 50 area leaving a genuine one-on-one contests on both occasions with no third man up to help our undersized player. Unless Aliir was playing on the wing I don't think he would have made a difference in these 2 goals.
We have a very good defence as a team, but it's not only how well we defend, but also how we transition from defence to offense. Aliir is the kind of player that marks the ball and immediately gets the ball moving forward, one way or another.

As for the matchup with Roughead, I would man him up with either Melican or Aliir all over the ground. You don't see small midfielders taking Buddy up the ground. He's always got a key defender running with him. And Buddy is much harder to defend through the midfield than Roughead. We just played into Clarko's hands by not realising the obvious, that Roughead would start on the wing, run around in the midfield a while, and then when he's got the right matchup go forward and exploit it.

Aliir is a key component to closing one of the main weaknesses in the current side. Going to the one ruckman fixed a problem, but we still to work on the clearance aspect at stoppages. A third is better ball use and structure going into the forward 50.

On a slightly different tack. Glen Luff from Champion Data said on SEN that their third ranked young defender in AFL is Lewis Melican. (Behind only Lever and Oscar McDonald)

What do people think of (1) Jack Trengrove and (2) Jake Spencer as trade targets (I'm assuming we might move one or more of our ruckmen on)

If we have a bit of spare cash in our cap I'd love to go in for this guy, and I have a feeling he may be obtainable

Who would McKenzie dislodge from our "best 22"? He was the guy that Gary Rohan kicked a bag on a few weeks back. Sure, it was his first senior game for a while, but when a player struggles to get a game at GC, there has to be some question around his ability.

I reckon we've already got a couple of players in our reserves who can quite probably do a similar job to McKenzie, especially if the main qualification is to be able to boof the ball a long way but not do much else.

I think McKenzie has had injury worries the past couple of seasons. If he can put those behind him he could be a very decent player.
