5 injuries, two pre game, three cheats in flouro and we lose by 6 points. We were not outcoached , we were screwed. I was there! Mickey mouse league.......and a side not, the sooner someone irons out Sicily, the better! What a dirty sookie @@@@@ he is.......

Just back from the game, still getting my head around what it means for us, but I can't agree with the pessimism I see in some comments above.

When we werre 0-6, I thought that I had bought a very expensive scarf. I had paid an extra $100 with my membership for a guaranteed spot at the GF should we make it, and the scarf came with that package. Six games in, and I was thinking there was no chance I'd be wearing it at the GF.

Now, I remain hopeful. For goodness's sake, we've lost two out of the last 12 - yet it seems tonight's loss has ushered in the apocalypse and the Swans are finished?! I don't think so.

If anything, the surprise is not the we lost our first game in nearly two months, but that we were within six points at the end after we'd played poorly. The boys looked tired, the late omissions surely can't have helped, and - it has to be said - Hawthorn's game plan was very effective against ours. But, for myself, I reckon we will do better against Geelong and Adelaide than we did tonight. The Hawks always seem to play well against us, and Longmire and his team have to look hard at that, but they shouldn't be scapegoated for a poor performance from the boys. Has Buddy played a less effective game for us this year, for example? I agree that one of the emergencies was a Foote in mouth call, he was quite ineffective and it's hard to imagine the alternatives would have served us equally ineffectively.

But something Horse said in one of his post-match pressers a few weeks ago shows that he understands that maintaining high standards week in, week out, as the coaches demand, is not easy. Surely he's right. I reckon we should cut him and the boys some slack over one disappointing performance.

I still reckon I might be wearing my scarf to the grannie.

          Go Bloods!

Hawthorn are really good at what they do. It's hard to coach against, and you need a lot of things to go right. In particular, we struggle against them because we're not generally a big contested marking side, and the Hawthorn style is very effective in taking away what we do well.
Thanks for the level head, Liz.

Match Day Thread Rnd 19 Hawthorn V Sydney. MCG. 19.50 pm.

I would be interested in an (objective) opinion from anyone who had a good view (or who watches replay carefully) of the over-the-head hand pass by Parker which was penalised as a throw.

Personally I think most handballs of that type are technically throws because the force of the action comes from the propulsion of the arms, not from the punch. But they have long been accepted as legitimate handballs. So why was this one penalised? (And I'm not looking for an umpire-conspiracy explanation.)

We've also got the MRP trial by media for Buddy V Hodge - I'd say Bud will be in trouble despite the fact Hodge instigated it.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

I agree with your assessment, Meg. I have not seen the replay yet, but watching it live from the wing (three rows back) I can understand why it was called a throw (in being as objective as I can). The action was more severe than a similar one, that was not paid, later in the game (by Mitchell, I think).

The problem, of course, is a matter of consistency. It is so rarely paid that it has been legitimised through common practice, which is infuriating. As such, my non-objective, and immediate, reaction was to yell out, "we lost a grand final with this @@@@".

I really don't know why it was paid in this instance tonight.

Thanks Matty10, your objective assessment above is helpful (I muttered to myself at the time when the later similar handball by the Hawks was allowed). And your non-objective observation is excellent!

We need to forget about the 0-6 start and patting ourselves on the back about the revival.
We are fighting for top 4, and finals and a win on the MCG against a non contender should be expected otherwise we might as well pack it in.

Longmire is right about the camera's though

I saw that too. Doesn't look good, but what is the alternative? Sit by himself (like James Brayshaw used to do), or sit the first half with Hawks, then 2nd half with Swans?

No fun losing, but it's very hard to keep streaks like ours going. Probably our biggest issue right now though is our growing
injury/not 100% fit list (Cunningham, Reid, Rohan, Lloyd, maybe JPK). This is not a good time to be without these guys.

Not last year and the year before that . Did we win the premiership against the Bulldogs or did I miss it?
