Think about it, it works on so many levels. Equalisation and removing players ransoming clubs to do trades with the threat of free agent move, and really rewards up and coming clubs. Eg. Under this system Brisbane would be a real free agent destination club.
    Simple rule for free agency

Sides that play off in a prelim - no free agents. Any free agents they want need to be traded for.

Bottom 4 of the top 8 - can recruit restricted free agents only, unless they offer a trade.

All other 10 clubs can recruit free agents as per normal.

This stops the top cluns getting the free agents, unless they offer up something of value.

I'll say one thing - AFLPA, you know it won't get changed!

That would mean a player can check out, but never leave Carlton -- sort of like The Hotel California.

The compensation picks awarded to the club that loses the FA penalises all other clubs by dropping them down the draft order, while the club that receives the FA gets all the benefits.
The club that receives the FA should have to give something up. Am I wrong?

Probably not, but it's one subject that Swans fans should probably keep their heads down on, given that we secured the biggest FA coup of all (and it cost us nothing in terms of picks).

The good thing about Lynch going to Richmond is that he didn't go to Hawthorn where he would have really made a big difference.
I agree with this. Everyone's thinking "top rated player going to top club - watch out". But it will change the way they play, and in a way that moves away from what has made them so good.

It also has to put some salary cap pressure on the Tigers, particularly as they already have one $1.something million dollar player on their books, plus a few more who must be on very good money (Riewoldt, Rance, Cotchin) even if they are taking less than they could get at other clubs. At some point the squeeze will bite Richmond.

Time to send the salary cap auditors around to Punt Rd. Besides it is right across the road from AAMI Park (home of the Storm)…..

                  Lol.
Integrity, LOL. Just goes to show how absurd our ban was. How the club, media and the public allowed them to get away with it is beyond me.

I'm amazing Richmond can afford Lynch. Martin is on more than Buddy and I would assume Lynch will be on over $1m/year.

You have to think Lynch must be accepting unders to play at a top club. Cant see how they could have 2 x million plus contracts along with Riewoldt, Cotchin and rance who would all be on pretty decent coin also.

Amazing how when Richmond do it , Robbo on AFL360 proclaims it as amazing recruiting , yet when we do it , its essentially called out as cheating and unfair.

Melbourne media hypocrisy at its finest.

I thought one of the benefits of free agency for players was giving those who played for lowly clubs an opportunity to play finals / play for a premiership (unless your name is Deledio).

The bigger problem, as others have pointed out, is that FA are free to their new clubs.

Players should be free to move but clubs should pay a fair price for them.

I have no issue with top names going to top clubs under free agency - its a natural progression. What frustrates me is that there is not even a peep about how they can manage it, yet we do it (on the back of an unexpected premiership, with a relatively immature overall list) and we end up with a trade ban.... the hypocrisy will never stop reeking.

But you only had to look at the front of the Herald Sun yesterday was it to see that, all in all, many still view the AFL as the VFL first and foremost - the interstate teams are just there almost out of inconvenience.
