Why would Dan want to go to the saints? He's the vice captain of one of most consistent clubs in the last two decades and missed finals only a few times. Grundy, Smith, McVeigh and Jack(should retire end of this year) are close to the end we don't have that many experienced players if look at our list.

If we really need cap room get rid of Sam Reid and Rohan theres 800k (maybe more) right there. Please for the love of god trade Reid for anything.

This whole story is BS just like McGovern leaving eagles to go a melbourne club(seriously)... Sloane to hawks Fyfe to saints last year. Beams is apparently going to the Dons but they said no. Journos are just making stuff up.

Dan's contract with the Swans will expire when he's 30 yo and it might be hard for him to get another big contract at that age. He might not even be fit enough to play. So if he can get a new 5 year deal it could be worth another $million to him. Players have a short time to earn big money, so there's so good incertive to move there. He might also be offered the captaincy.

Reid and Rohan are both contracted, so they can't be gotten rid of unless they want to go and some club wants them. I believe Reid has a family committed to Sydney, so I can't see him leaving. I'm not sure there would be any great interest in Rohan, although I can see him moving to Victoria if the opportunity arose.

We should have some money in the kitty since the big long term contracts were signed when it would have been anticipated that Tippett and his salary would still be on the books next year. But it may not be enough to get a new big name player plus fill the requirements of current players coming out of contract, like Lloyd.

Notice Ben Reid did his calf coming back through the Collingwood reserves. Would be interesting to know what percentage of games him and Sam have played during their respective careers. Both very good but am not holding my breath re Sam being of much value to us going forward. Problematic for salary cap as well and I'm pretty sure no club would entertain the thought of a trade. Don't think I'm being overly pessimistic, just realistic.

            MUST sign Lloyd asap
Agree there's no point signing them now.

But I'd be inclined to let Lloyd go if he's being offered a larger contract elsewhere and that is important to him. He's a good player but not irreplaceable. If he does go, I'd give McVeigh another year (assuming he wants it). He's playing good enough football and he's not that old. He can then continue to conduct the backline and ease O'Riordan and/or Stoddart into Lloyd's role.

Grundy's ongoing future depends on stuff we don't know anything about. In terms of just his playing form, I wouldn't have a problem with them keeping him on for a year but on the proviso that he might play lots of NEAFL if we have a good run with injury. Our backline of the future will ideally consist of Aliir, Melican and AJ filling key tall roles (assuming Melican and AJ can get and stay fit) with Rampe filling whatever role he is most needed in. Aliir and Melican are quick enough that playing two or three genuine talls (plus Rampe) shouldn't be a huge problem, though most likely only two would play most games.

I often think of Lloyd as our new McVeigh. He's actually tracking better than McVeigh at similar stages of their respective careers. Lloyd is still on a upward trajectory, so we don't know how high his ceiling is. I'd be very inclined to keep him. I think Harley said he was confident of signing Lloyd, and usually that means it will get done. Lloyd is likely to float between halfback and the midfield, depending on our needs for the game.

Grundy's mental health issues aside, I think he should retire. Agree that our backline talls next year look to be Melican, Aliir and Johnson, so there's really no room for Grundy anyway. Maibaum will probably be ready to play some games if injuries require. And Blakely can fill in as well.

How tall / quick are AJ and Rampe. I’m wondering who is going to replace Nick Smith who is the great irreplaceable of our defence.

If Lloyd has been offered big money, there may be little we can do about it, but given the drop off in our midfield, he would be a more than useful option in there as an outside mid with a big tank. Started there and was pretty good. Could be a solution to our depth problem in there.

Isn't he a small forward? We have Papley and Ronke covering that role.

I suspect that Lana Dunkley is the pick of the bunch, but I doubt she’ll make the draft

Josh been in sparkling form for the Dogs this last month. We should try Kyle if he wants to be here.

Does anyone think Jack Billings could be a part of a trade with St Kilda? Although I don’t rate David King very highly, I’ve read where he has said that he could be someone St Kilda could trade and could do well ina new environment.

Thought the analysis was better than normal and not as shallow as it usually is. Describing Rampe as long in the tooth at 28 was a bit over the top. It is true that our midfield doesn't bat as deep and that we need to revisit trading in some outside talent.

I thought it was the same old tired stuff and provided no insights. You could sum it up as:

                                - we have a few older players
                                - we've had a few injuries this year to key players (especially taller players)
                                - we have debuted more players in the last couple of seasons than most other clubs but the jury is still out on whether they'll be any good or not.

                                DOH!

Alternatively, it could be summed up as "it's very hard to stay near the top for a long period of time".
