Met once. Spoke to the person who gave me this information today. More info came to me n it’s his name came up n Sydney approached his management. Not on very good terms with the defensive coach n most likely would have played a lot of senior footy in other sides this years. Stevie J is a massive fan.Comment

Two years ago I was very supportive of Newman getting a go in the senior team. He came into the team last year and played quite well, but unfortunately hasn't improved since. He's not a good defensive zone defender, although he is a decent defender playing as a wingman, which he often does. The midfield group we have coming through is too strong to keep Newman as a first team selection. It makes sense for him to move to another club.
Giving effect to recent announcement and rumours about player movements, here's my target strategy going into the post season:
- The trade that makes the most sense for Hannebery is to send pick 13 and our 4th round pick to Saints to for picks 4 and (current) pick 57 (for a few extra points). This rates the Hannebery trade at around Pick 20. It sounds fair to me. The Saints have to back themselves in that getting Hanners is worth dropping 9 places in the 1st round of the draft. They should still be able to get a good player a pick 13.
- Swap Rohan for Thurlow. A couple of players in a similar position, both had serious injuries and both never lived up to their potential. On the positive side, both have shown they are capable of big things. Thurlow would be a replacement for Harrry Marsh, but Thurlow could fit into a backline along with Melican, Aliir and Rampe if he can stay free of injury and get some consistency into his game. We may not be getting much, but we're giving away much either.
- As much as I like Jake Lloyd, I would try to do a deal with GC sending Lloyd and Newman to them for Pick #3. It sounds like too much, but they did trade pick 2 for Lachie Weller. Robinson, Marsh and Towers could also be offered as well as a trade down from our 2nd round pick.
- GET GAFF as free agent. It worries me that NM have something rumoured to be around $1.1 mil pa for Gaff. We can't come close to matching that. But money is not always everything.
- Trade one of our 2nd round picks from this year plus our 2019 1st round pick for Dylan Shiel plus a 3rd or 4th rounder.
I think this is all reasonable and doable. The Gaff one is a hard, given there's a lot of competition for his services.
In Summary:
Coming In: Gaff, Shiel, Thurlow, Bailey Smith (Pick#3), Izak Rankine (Pick #4) and Nick Blakey.
Going Out: Hannebery, Rohan, Lloyd, Newman, some other depth players, our 2019 1st round pick.
This gets us back in business in 2019 and beyond.Last edited by Ludwig; 13 September 2018, 02:44 PM.Comment

However just wondering if we'd still have the cap space to afford both Shiel & Gaff as they both will demand big $$$$$, even allowing for the offload of Hanners, Rohan & Lloyd. It's a big IF, but it will be worth it to maximise Buddy's output whilst he's still in his peak.
Harley sounded very confident Lloyd will re-sign which gives me the impression his contract is dependant on the Hanners trade being finalised.Comment

Newman will not be missed.
Too slow, not accountable in a defensive role and does not have the skill to play midfield/forwards.Comment

In no particular order:
*Rohan for Thurlow might get done with a swap of lower picks to compensate for any perceived difference in value. Although Gaz might end up at Norf.
*Gaff as free agent. Who knows. I think Sydney could be the ideal location for a player seeking to keep a low profile. And we wouldn’t necessarily have to match Norf. His decision will be about more than $.
*Lloyd plus a bundle of fringe players for pick 3. No. I do believe we expect him to stay. If he goes I’d be amazed if we got pick 3. I reckon pick 14 for Mitchell is a better reference point than pick 2 for Weller. I could see them on trading a mid first rounder. He’s out of contract so they could play hard ball.
*pick 4 for Hanners and change. I don’t think that will happen. More likely a second rounder (from someone else or future) or even a player.
I think Swans have plans to trade out the pick for a player. Possibly Darcy Moore.
*Shiel. Hmmm. Can’t afford Shiel and Gaff. But one or the other would be massive.Comment
