It really feels like we are cutting our losses with Hanners and Rohan. It seems that we will get very little in the way of draft picks for either, just some salary cap relief. Not shaping as an especially exciting trade period for us.

That seems like a reasonable assessment to me. I can't believe the Swans would let Hanners leave without having a plan to replace him. But acquiring Ryan Clarke plus Jones and Mills into the midfield would seem a bit underwhelming. Mind you when Jetta left, they didn't really have a like for like replacement and Lloyd took his place. Ditto we never really found a true replacement for Malceski. Perhaps they are hoping to free Rampe up to be more offensive. That would be good.

Yeah Swans are too soft during trade. Pick 14 from the Hawks for Tom Mitchell, we got fleeced.

His 2018 season was his worst for a while, and we have no way of knowing how much he was affected by personal changes in his life. If he were to stay, he's clearly capable of playing reasonable footy - ie would be at least vying to be in the best 22. His best is pretty useful. He just hasn't been able to produce it consistently.
The trauma of loss and then 6 months of sleep deprivation (hello Reg) will do that to you. I am pretty sure, stay or leave, his 2019 will be a step above his 2018. His numbers have never been great but his moments in games have been. He's also a great clubman. I hope he stays.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Agree with this. Has had a number of match winning big moments for us and the club has supported him through a fair amount of trauma. Wouldn't mind at all if he stayed.

If we don't pull off a trade for a high salary player, which is looking less and less likely, then there shouldn't be any great pressure to unload Hanners along with his big salary. If the trade period winds down and the Saints still have pick 4, I wouldn't trade Hanners unless we end up with pick 4 in some combination of picks. The pressure to do the trade reverts to the Saints. I would rather back Hanners to rebound next year than give him away for a song.

My instinct is that the Hanners money is spent or earmarked for something else. Even if that’s within the current squad.

Highly likely. We have a number of improving young guns that we must keep.

But that was not the feeling a week ago when most of us thought we were in the market for a gun player, being the reason we had to let Hanners go.

I thought the money was earmarked for a gun. Not so sure now.

Today’s hope is that the Swans will move quickly to do the Hanners trade and only then pounce once they know they have the $.

Feeling more and more like wishful thinking.

If we had enough money to entertain a contract for Darcy Moore, we must have (or had) some discretionary cash. Who knows, perhaps we wouldn't have offered as much to Naismith and Lloyd, but even if that's the case, it'd be offset by the Hannebery and Rohan contracts. We must have something to offer the right player.

Is it possible we're lining up a big fish secretly that will catch us and the footy world by complete surprise? (i.e. Another Buddy scenario?).

McRae......maybe the "AFL Trade Whisperer", for all his bravado, is right?

Not necessarily for season 2019. There could be a decent free agent available at the end of 2019 that they've been talking to. We know the Buddy move was being discussed privately a year before it happened. Maybe they see now as a good opportunity to clear some cap space, maybe bring some cap payments forward if there is surplus in 2018, and be ready to pounce at the end of next year.

The counter-thought process to that is that it would be rather nice to be in with a chance of a premiership while Buddy is still playing at a high level. To do that, our midfield does need to deepen and strengthen. Deferring that for a year reduces the time frame for seriously contending with Buddy by a year.

The only one I can think of is Wingard. It seems like his situation is stagnant. Could they be waiting for the Hanners deal to be done?
