Pretty good final quarter, although we never really looked like running down the Giants, due to a bit of goalkicking inaccuracy and a couple of debatable frees, that resulted in goals to the Giants. One was a push in the back decision, where it seemed that a holding the ball or an illegal disposal could have been payed. The second was a side-on bump in a marking contest.

Anyway, I thought that Sam Wicks was our best, with 34 possessions and much tackling and harassing. Rowbottom and Cameron were also prominent; although Simpson won the hitouts. James Bell gave plenty of drive in the final quarter. Foot and McInerney were handy when the ball came their way. Cody Hirst showed that chase down tackles are a strong part of his game. Academy player Kyle McKellar was possibly our best defender. Other academy players had their moments: McGrath and Eynaud especially.

I agree that Wicks was our best player. He has come on alot this year and would have to be next cab of the rank for a small pressure forward in our ones.

Yes, in the absence of Rose, he probably spent a bit more time in the midfield, and acquitted himself well. I certainly think that he's done enough this year, to at least earn another rookie contract for next year.

Actually, after I wrote that, I thought that I better check his contract status. According to Footywire, he has a category B rookie contract, until the end of the 2020 season. Couldn't find any confirmation, but if so, he may be doing enough for an upgrade.

Ugg, ressie watchers, does it now seem likely that Pink will get another contract as he seems to be featuring a lot more after injury riddled seasons.

Pink and an injured Maibaum are our only genuine back up tall defenders. Based on this and his recent performances, he should get a contract, unless we sign some outside talent.

Yes, the retirement of Grundy and the injury to Maibaum does increase his chances. And while I'm a little surprised that he was thought to be one of our best today, he has played pretty well for most of the season. His effort against Day a few weeks ago probably being his best game.
Though things might be complicated by rookie list rules. If he's allowed to have another season on the rookie list, then I would say that he would have a very good chance. But if he has to be upgraded to the main list, then that makes him possibly a 50/50 proposition?

Strange selection for best. Pinkie with 10 touches vs Wicks with 40?

Wonder what happened to Stoddart? Wasnt a senior's emergency so must have pulled out due to injury. Pity

Saw him warming up with seniors before the match in the rooms.

                            Stoddart was an emergency.

I imagine the AFL won't let emergency players go into the action for fear of being rorted, but it would be good if Stoddart had been able to take one of the THREE vacancies.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Maybe introduce a Substitute system? That was a dark period for the game, stupid three on the bench plus a sub, typical of the on the fly decision making at VFL House, clubs, players, fans, Fantasy players all hated it.
