It's some serious zip and hardness around the ball if we lose both Papley and Jones. I hope we can replace them with like for like players. I'd envision a player swap or future pick for Jones would be acceptable. Maximum payment for Papley, or no deal happens.

Not to mention the squad is pretty light on for players in that peak performance age range of 24-27 (or thereabouts) and these two are two of the few we do have who are just entering it. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to lose one may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Swans remain undecided about their willingness to trade Papley, assuming he has indicated he wouldn't mind a relocation to Melbourne. Maybe they are waiting on Jones to make his call, or might be willing to accommodate a Papley move if they are, indeed, interested in Daniher but are waiting for him to indicate whether he wants to move. Losing Papley will weaken our team considerably, but maybe they are willing to do so if he provides the trade currency to acquire Daniher. If so, they might have invited Papley to explore his options, while remaining equivocal about whether they are willing to trade him. (And also making any possible willingness to trade him contingent on receiving strong trade compensation in return, given he can't just leave regardless, unlike the uncontracted Jones.)

The club has to explore and cover for all possible outcomes in a professional manner so I wouldn't be surprised if what you describe Liz is accurate. Doesn't mean Papley is leaving or Daniher, for example, is coming because there is much to play out. Surely we can't afford to lose Papley in particular unless we land something exceptional.

The Mitchell trade compensation was poor, but I wouldn't lament too much about it. We were able to draft Ollie Florent as a result of the trade, gaining an exciting young player plus 5 years of youthfulness, which can be equated to 5 years of extra service from a quality midfielder. I don't think we lost in the trade taken as a whole, despite Mitchell's elite talent.

Then again the 7 news report might be all bull dust.

Bulldust galore at this time of season. Can't stand Trump but there is a massive amount of fake news.

A great deal of it coming from Trump himself. But the trade period is a free-for-all as far as the sports journos are concerned. As long as it attracts clicks, it's in there.

Our club has been going on about the go home factor at northern clubs and Melbourne clubs preying on and stripping those clubs of players. If they allow a player to go home with 4 years on his contract then they are not serious. It would have to be a mighty good reason for that to be allowed. Remember the greedy Collingwodd and the Dayne Beams trade. How that has backfired on the Pies.

I will be cheering loud and strong for GWS this week.

I assume the potential trades out of Jones and Papley are part of the grand plan to improve the team, but I am struggling to see how. Two players who add a bit of hardness and willingness to take the game on, both coming into the prime of their careers. Something seems amiss...

Where is our ricky Henderson ?

28/29 yrs of age at the time
                      Adelaide de listed free agent
                      Costs only peanuts

Comes across to the hawks for the last 3 seasons and absolutely kills it

Better then any of our wingers including jones

And at 31yrs of age this year still a required player for Hawthorn and gets another season contract while they are developing their young outside players of the future

These types of players are cheap, very effective and he enables hawthorn to be able to play wide and uncontested and be 9th on the ladder in a rebuilding phase compared to our 15th !!!

                      Brilliant recruiting

Jones is out of contract. If we don't do a deal then he either stays or goes into the draft of his own accord, which means he takes pot luck as to who picks him up. Clubs will always do deals with decent out of contract players because it is better to get at least something for them. But with Papley, he is contracted for 4 years. It will have to be a mighty good deal to let him go. I would rather keep him than trying to trade for a bloke who is always injured and has played only 11 games in 2 seasons.

Heard Sam Maclure give his Trade update on SEN this morning and there was NO mention of Papley meeting up with Carlton or North. All Sam said was Papley met up with his manager in Melbourne last week and is supposedly still deciding whether he'll request a trade, which Sam is still favouring he'll end up at Carlton for their pick 8 which he thinks will hinge around what Joe Daniher decides. Sam has gut feeling Joe Daniher will announce his decision next week after the Grand Final and any trade deals involving Papley/Daniher won't get done until very late in the trade period.

That partial experience vacuum was one of the dangers that the Swans willingly exposed themselves too in 2012-13, it'd have a sort of nightmare symmetry if they made that vacuum absolute in 2019/20 with a similar HUGE$$$$ gamble.

So Sam probably has no idea apart from a gut feeling. My gut feeling is that I haven't got a clue where the truth lies, just like Sam.

Papley looks very happy and content joking with his team mates at the Brownlow Count tonight.
