Sounds like the old famous Swans strategy of drafting rejects & turning them into valuable players (JPK, McGlynn, Ted, Dunkley, Tilt etc... Jury still out on Menzel, Thurlow & Clarke).Comment

Salary dump, is contracted on big $ and GWS need the cap space. Scully last year was a dodgy deal, went to Hawks supposedly because his ankle was so bad he may not play again then miracles of miracles his ankle comes good!
Edit - just saw your post bloodspirit replying the same :-)Comment

Barry, you are 100% correct. Retention is a real problem for northern clubs.
I think sometimes we forget the young guys are in their late teens to early 20s. Most people of this demographic these days are still living at home and very dependent on their families. This includes the partners of the young guys. Now some might say suck it up, it's your job. This applies in the real world but in the AFL, if you are good enough, you will have a club from home saying not only will we offer you more, but we will also bring you back to your family. I bet St Kilda are already working on Ben King and his family saying exactly this. It's almost impossible for the northern clubs to counter this except the promise of a flag.
1. The acquisition of Chris Fagan as coach and David Noble as head of football.
2. The loss of so many good players led to "a new philosophy when it comes to drafting. Pick kids from the country because they'll be less likely to be homesick down the track. And if your draftees are good mates already ... they'll be less likely to decamp." Example is Hugh McCluggage and Jarrod Berry who "jumped at the opportunity to sign contract extensions once they were settled at the club." And further down: "Another close observer says there is an unspoken 'no dickheads' rule that plays a big part in shaking the make-up of the playing list." Fancy that!
3. The influence of Luke Hodge.
4. Brisbane has become something of a "destination club." Examples Charlie Cameron and Lockie Neale and his mate Lincoln McCarthy.
5. The "Gabbatoir" is back.
If only Gold Coast could do the same!He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

Is 'Tilt' Carter in the Swans Hall of Fame? Should be. Great player for us after coming from the Roys.Comment

Would be a pretty big factor in clearing home off the gws list along with most of his last year contract and desperately trying to free up funds for the super expensive squadLast edited by Auntie.Gerald; 4 September 2019, 05:20 PM."be tough, only when it gets tough"

My guess is that we will lose Darcy Cameron as he has been unlucky with injury and not given a chance apart for one game. Others may include Rose, traded to Adelaide or anyone who will take him for late pick, Fox, who I feel has reached his potential and doesnt add much more value, and Menzel as he will keep out our youth talent. With 4 retirements and potentially Jones leaving, we still need to delist a few more. Maibaum must be given another year to see if he can regain his excellent 2018 NEAFL season after his lost 2019 season.Durak Tucker is a sleeper and keeper due to his potential and growth to KP height. Pink , Amartey to stay as are still young and have potential. McLean showed good positive signs in the season, Knoll for his size, and Hirst for his potential and obvious talent. I agree that the club is holding off on delistings until tge NEAFL season is overComment

Someone mentioned an article in the AFL Record that picked up these issues. The article was written by Ashley Brown and gives five reasons why things have changed so much in Brisbane. In abbreviated form they say:
1. The acquisition of Chris Fagan as coach and David Noble as head of football.
2. The loss of so many good players led to "a new philosophy when it comes to drafting. Pick kids from the country because they'll be less likely to be homesick down the track. And if your draftees are good mates already ... they'll be less likely to decamp." Example is Hugh McCluggage and Jarrod Berry who "jumped at the opportunity to sign contract extensions once they were settled at the club." 5. The "Gabbatoir" is back.

I've always wanted to look more deeply into the Swans reputation for successful recycling. Should be able to put numbers on it by looking at games played versus games at previous club, then compare all clubs. Sounds like a project for the off-season.Comment
