2019 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel
The bit that stands out from that article to me is;
The Blues could be forced into some creative accounting work to convince Betts of his prospects of earning money as a Carlton club ambassador and club official follow.
Remind me why we have a salary cap again?
Let’s say u agreed to a contract extension at the Swans at a time when u were suffering and or on the come back from carpel tunnel syndrome
Let’s say ur long term girlfriend is finishing her degree in melb but she would like to stay in melb
Let’s say u would like to head back to melb
Let’s say ur current contract is $400k pa
Let’s say north Melbourne offers $750k pa for 3/4 years
What would u do ?
Now, let’s say that you’re the Swans.
Let’s say that if a player wants to disregard contractual obligations that they previously agreed to.
Let’s say that the player - rightly - has their own personal interests first.
And let’s say that by playing hardball and not rolling over to accomodate the wantaway players desire to return home to his girlfriend and be paid a truckload of money to achieve this goal, that the club can extract the best possible deal (in the best interests of the Club) to facilitate the players wishes, or else the player can 1) stay at the Swans 2) stay another year and try to orchestrate a trade again next year or 3) sit out of football until his contract expires.
What should the Club do (in the best interests of the Club - and consequently the players, members and supporters)?
I’m not saying they should, but there are 2 sides to every coin
Not enforceable (as in you can’t make him stay & play), but enforceable to stop him going elsewhere on principle if they wish
I remember GWS made Cam McCarthy sit out of a year of AFL footy after he decided he wanted to "go home" a few
months after signing a three year deal. I'm sure part of the reason GWS did that was to say to other players this is what
we'll do if you try and pull out of a contract. Essentially they made a example of him.
Surely if Papley is worth anywhere near the $750K p.a. (or more) that I have read he is being offered, and we've got him signed up for considerably less, that's all the more reason to keep him? The only downside is that he might feel a bit shortchanged and unhappy. But he shouldn't. Club would be winning on this occasion but there's plenty of risk for clubs with players being injured and unavailable but still requiring payment and that's a risk clubs have to take. Nobody expected AJ to repay any of his long contract back even though he didn't play. And nor should they.

There appears to be an extremely strong positive correlation between the size of the financial inducement offered and the degree of homesickness experienced by some players
I can respect a player who moves back home (or out of the Melbourne media goldfish bowl) without seeking and receiving a massive pay rise to do so.
But once word of a massive salary increase is mentioned, I find it hard not to question the motivation for the move - and then the character of the player.
On a personal level, it makes it difficult for me to forgive (or warm to) such players.

Agree, but is it true of Papley? Dad not angry for nothing. Far too many footy journos justifying their existence, especially at this time of year. Soap opera environment.
If I was offered twice my annual salary at another employer I'd move. Most of us would.
The Swans surely have a few contacts that can offer his girlfriend a job in Sydney if she is the major reason for him allegedly wanting to move to Melbourne.
I would expect that his player manager has been in his ear. When Tom extended his contact to the end of 2023 surely his manager had a say in that. Then along come a couple of offers and the player manager goes.....oh fruit, I got that wrong so back tracks to protect his reputation. These blokes get a commission on new contracts, that's how they earn their crust. They churn players all the time to get their commission. If they were finanacial advisers constantly moving (churning) clients' money they would be hung, drawn and quartered. Where do you think these journos get their info? Managers throw stuff out there all the time to sniff out an offer. His manager must have said we will get the deal done even though you have a 4 year contract. If he doesn't want to play for us then he can sit out his contract and ruin his career. We must play hard ball on this one.
So we let Papley go and pick up a player who has had groin problems most of his career. A genuine lose, lose situation regardless how complicated the trade might be.
