Sydney media, sponsors and fans will take to Joe Danihers abilities and post celebrations like a skier to a mountain

His contract will protect some downside for us re games played vs not played

Defences will be stretched and it allows us to get the best rotation of forwards while getting the best of buddy in his later career

Plus that video footage is fairly evident of the massive upside when JD runs onto a handpass out of the middle of the field after rucking...........it’s a scary prospect on the SCG

    Boom !

Im stoked if it happens and we are one step closer

There is no reason JD and Bud can’t have 50/60 goal seasons each next few years if they stay on the pitch

Sam Reid will also benefit massively and could sneak up to 40 goals for a season which we have been waiting for so long

I wonder what the plan is to address our weaknesses in the middle of the ground ? I understand the need for a Buddy successor and a ‘drawcard’ player to keep the Sydney crowd interested and getting bums on seats, but I don’t think it’s necessarily the right path to our next premiership. And ultimately that should be the number one concern .

This comes off and it’s likely a large chunk of salary cap eaten up , and we’re giving a pick 5 minimum , which we could have used on a potential midfield gun in the draft or as a trade for a specific need there or elsewhere.

He won’t get to us for unders now that he’s declared he wants to come. We’ve obviously made him assurances that we will get the deal done or he wouldn’t have made it public . Essendon hold all the cards now and we are dealing with Dodoro . Pretty much the worst position to be in.

I don't think Essendon hold all of the Aces. They are just acting like they do. Not surprising really.

Certainly cause for optimism based on what’s on show here.
I must admit that I am still a little confused in regard to his fitness. Is he on a long term injury list with the Bombers?
Assuming the deal is done to move him across to us when could he actually pull on the Swans jumper in a game?

Shortly after the Daniher announcement yesterday I was looking at his Wikipedia page. Attached is what I found. I quickly amended it to a more accurate depiction.

So many IF's with JD returning to his best for any length of time which he hasn't done for 2 years. This is why I'd rather wait getting him as FA next year, accepting the risk we may lose opportunity getting him if we did so.

I also think the reason why the club is undecided on keeping Menzel for another year is dependant on Daniher & to an extent holding onto Papley. This year's trade period is definitely going to be a wild ride for us!

In answer to the comment above that Bombers did not offer Daniher an extension, according to an article today in The Age by Jake Niall who is an excellent football reporter, the Bombers tried to negotiate a contract extension with him in recent months but he was evasive with them at the time. This is when they began to suspect that he may wish to leave. See attached.

PS There are 3 pages of The Age dedicated to the Daniher news today. It really is a big story in Melbourne.

Unless we address our recent poor form at the stoppages, in particular clearances, then the Daniher trade will be a waste of time. It is going to be interesting if the club is going to do something about this at trade time.

We need some ball winners and a decent ruckman.

While we are at it, a good KPD would help too, unless the intention is to play Reid and McCartain down back for significant periods of time.

Key Position Defenders are the least of our concerns if you leave out decent. We have Rampe, Aliir, Melican, Maibaum, Pink, Amartey as well as Reid, McCartin, Mills and McLean who can all play as KPD's. We may need to trade one or two out. I would keep Pink based on his NEAFL form, Maibaum if his medical is OK which does not bode well for Amartey. Decent player at NEAFL level but not sure where he could play at AFL level. Not quite big enough to be a ruck and we are starting to look a very tall side. Not a good wet weather team.

McCartin has spent time at CHB and looks at natural. Melican slipped a little last year admittedly coming off a long term injury.

I disagree , think he looks far more natural in the forward line ( other than the kicking part, but even that seems to be improving ). A guy who can clunk a contested grab like mccartin can belongs in the forward line flying for marks , not fisting them away from the opposition .

No law against defenders marking the ball a la Leo Barry and Jeremy McGovern to name a few. Best backmen do this.

Essendon are renowned as being a lousy club to deal with... Now that JD has declared he wants to move to the Swans, we should simply make a reasonable offer...

Say pick 9 if Papley goes...

If they don't like that, then we should keep our powder dry and wait till next year and get him for free....

If he changes his mind, so be it, there will be other targets and plenty of largess to spend..... There is no way, given his injury history, that he is worth more than one 1st round pick...

                            He's a risk.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

I like McCartin as a key defender from the bits I've seen thus far, he seems a natural.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

No there isn’t , but Jeremy McGovern is an elite intercept marker , he’s an average defender. Leo barry could do it all , but he’s a special example .
