I still think we would have approached Freeo to swap our pick 5 and 42 for their picks 7 and 26 ie same value in points........Freeo I think will jump at pick 5

We give Essendon pick 7 and Jones which would probably be essendons preference as good trading plus good PR.......OR our pick7 and our second round pick next year which is more then they get next year in compensation and JDs contract of approx $900k to use in 2020 a year early

We then keep picks 25 and 26 and 51 and either upgrade those into one pick (value is pick 6 in points) or maintain the picks which Kineear alluded great value later in the draft this year ie rowbottom was pick 25 last year. Or keep pick 25 this year and combine picks 26 and 51 into a healthy pick 22ish next year ?

Paps I truly believe we will force to stay in his contract and his partner will move to Sydney and they will be happier then living apart like they did for 4 years. Or we get pick 8/9 ish in a trade and still pick up a very handy young player in the draft

Riley Knights we give adelaide pick 59 most likely

Bennell we get for no cost except his contract which would be so game affected and minimise our downside

I think Swans are going to have to play hardball on Jones as we need a decent pick to use in the Daniher deal.

Wonder if the Dons would also entertain (1) Cameron (2) Grassy as part of the trade, given their interest in him earlier in the year. A cynic would say we drafted Knoll just to stop the Bombers getting him. And then didn’t play him. Now would be the time to give him up.

If they want an inside player, why not Jones?

Well that annoys me, Saints would have the absolute poorest draft hand to get players. At best it'll be their 2020 second. Let's wait and see if Essendon are interested in Jones, would be better to send him and a first for Daniher than take the Saints 2020 second which, with FA compo's and a raft of NGA's next year, could end up late 30s.

This isn’t fantasy football or SuperCoach. They’re players, not footy cards in the playground. And it’s the AFL not the NBA or MLB. Jones has to actually want to go to the Bombers. Jones actually has to sign a contract.

Deven Robertson is arguably a pick 5 as he played this year with a popped out shoulder and still killed it and could be anything in the future

They will want to push up the draft and utilise what they get from brad Hill trade etc to get both players

Daniher nominates Swans - sydneyswans.com.au

The Sydney Swans can confirm Essendon forward Joe Daniher has advised that he would like to be traded to the Swans.

Daniher is contracted to the Essendon Football Club for the 2020 season.

The Club respects that Joe is a contracted player and will approach Essendon in coming days in relation to whether a potential trade could be facilitated.

The official trade period begins on Monday.

If he changes his mind, so be it, there will be other targets and plenty of largess to spend..... There is no way, given his injury history, that he is worth more than one 1st round pick...

3. Has his set shot goal kicking improved?

Unless we address our recent poor form at the stoppages, in particular clearances, then the Daniher trade will be a waste of time. It is going to be interesting if the club is going to do something about this at trade time.

We need some ball winners and a decent ruckman.

While we are at it, a good KPD would help too, unless the intention is to play Reid and McCartain down back for significant periods of time.

Agree on this one Ralph. Are we looking at the hole and not the doughnut.

I disagree , think he looks far more natural in the forward line ( other than the kicking part, but even that seems to be improving ). A guy who can clunk a contested grab like mccartin can belongs in the forward line flying for marks , not fisting them away from the opposition .

We are right now sitting with 5 maximum open slots on the roster.

Let's assume that Papley, Jones and Cameron are traded out, bringing that up to 8.

• I agree with Ernie, that we should offer pick 9 for Daniher that we get from the Papley trade and just hold out if they baulk. In the end we 'cave in' and give them pick 5, which is worth about the same as pick 9 and our early 3rd rounder. Essendon won't do much better than pick 9 in compo for Daniher next year anyway, so there's no bluffing here from Essendon. We can wait. And then Essendon would have to play all next year with losing Daniher at year end, including the constant annoyance from journos writing about it and talking about it on AFL 360 and SEN. It can't help their 2020 campaign. I think we hold the cards here.
• Try to trade Jones and Cameron for 2020 picks. Or try to add around 1000 points for 2020 in some fashion.
• We use pick 43 and to acquire Tom Cutler. I think he's the best fit for us out of the available midfielders who have been floated around.
• We recruit Riley Knight for later picks
• We sign Harley Bennell as a DFA
• We are back to 5 picks max.
• We use pick 9 to draft emerging ruckman Luke Jackson and try to put to rest all this churning of ruckmen and get some long term ruck stability once he develops enough to take on the job full time.
• We use 2 more picks in the ND and maybe another in the RD.
• We go into 2020 draft with extra points for Campbell and Gulden, as well as flexibility to position ourselves best to get the most out of our 2020 picks.

Despite reports that we need to replace our aging midfield, this is complete rubbish. There's only JPK going out in the next 5 years, so after our midfield group could stay intact for a long time. Parker will just turn 27, so should have another 6 or 7 years left. In fact, the only key players we will lose to retirement in the next 3 years are Buddy and Kennedy, so we are looking at net gains in depth over this period through the draft. We usually add around 3 quality AFL players per draft, so we should go up a net 7 quality players during this time, albeit the loss of Buddy and Kennedy would be losing elite players. But some of the players drafted will become elite players, so it breaks even over the long run.

Losing Papley and Jones will hurt for a team trying to become quicker, but we are prepared with our astute drafting of players like Stoddart, Ling, McInerney, Bell and Foot. I'm not sold on Hirst, but he's very quick as well. I'm also more confident than others that Ronke can fill Papley's shoes, especially if he becomes the number one small forward and not living in Papley's shadow.

The problem with our stoppage work has been the lack of a good ruckman. I think Naismith is our only hope as we are not going to get a quality ruckman via trade. We should try to keep Cameron, but I feel that's a lost cause. Sinclair is okay, but more for his work around the ground and doesn't compete well in the ruck.

Rowbottom is a ball winner and will only get better next year. Dawson was a big time ball winner in the NEAFL and I feel he will be so at AFL level as well. With Daniher coming we can move Reid to defence to play alongside Aliir, Melican, Rampe and COR. We don't need Mills in defence. He can add to the midfield as well. Heeney should spend more time in the midfield too. Lloyd and Cunningham can play HF/wing; both are good goal kickers and win the ball on the outside.

I heard that we won our greatest percentage of clearances when Papley was in the midfield, so that will be a loss.

It's unfortunate that we have to depend on a ruckman who has only played 28 games in 7 years, but that's all we've got. It's a shame how we've mishandled Darcy Cameron, so we only have ourselves to blame.

Richmond don't have a strong tap ruckman, but have orchestrated a game style that doesn't depend on winning the clearances. In fact, they were last in clearance, yet clearly the best team in the AFL. It's up to our coaches to develop a game style that fits our personnel. There are many ways to skin a cat (hearsay, as I've never skinned even 1 cat).
