While I'm happy for us to walk away from the Daniher deal if Essendon sticks to its ridiculous stance, my gut feel is that it will get done at the last minute - probably for a first rounder and a second rounder or future pick.

I agree. Pick 9 and a second rounder.

That they're still talking about getting Kurt Danniher is alarming.
That they're still talking about trading out a contracted player, is even more alarming.
I would seriously sit Papley down in a quiet corner and teach him a lesson on signing a contract and the legal implications of breaking a contract.
Doesn't matter if he's "disappointed". Life doesn't give you participation awards.
          Can players get sacked?
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

If the club sacked him, then the club would have to pay him out. Effectively he is sacking the club, maybe he should have
to pay out the club the value of his remaining contract. The club set aside four/five years of his salary out of their salary
cap when the deal was signed. That money could have been used to sign another player who can actually withstand the
            rigours of living at Tamarama.

              Gold!

I don’t understand why the club is even pandering to Papley’s desire to break his contract. The selfish ingrate needs to be given a clear and firm no. The recent nonsense in the media about him feeling lonely and left out in Sydney was beyond the pale. We all know he’s great mates with Hayward, Cunningham and Ronke, and he looks pretty happy at the moment travelling around Europe with them, without his girlfriend and away from his supposedly much missed family.

Amen to that. That recent nonsense in the media was pathetic and the club should be seething about it imho.

                  Hi All,

I am a new poster... but have read all the talk re trading.

For what its worth, our humble CEO needs to take a course in negotiating. He is constantly allowing the narrative surrounding Papely, Jones, and dare I say it Daniher, be skewed against the Swans by letting the likes of Essendon and Carlton dictate terms. He isn't forthright enough to say that Paps as 4 years to run on his contract in his discussions with Carlton, and thus the paradigm surrounding his move is completely different to that of Daniher (who has a further one). I feel he has backed himself into a corner that he will not be able to get out of, and may want to save face in doing a deal for Daniher almost at any cost. I understand the discussion about Daniher's potential, but if you look at the stance that Dodoro has adopted for Essendon, we should be doing the same and more with Papley. As much as I think that Dodoro is harsh in his approach, I wish that he was our chief negotiator, and not Harley.

Having said all this, the way you approach a negotiation is by setting a high value from which you can only come down. Harley appears to have set too low a bar, and in all my experience he will not be able to trade up.

With all due respect, none of us know what position Harley has made with any deal. It is frustrating for us as fans but the club has a history of keeping their cards close to their chests and saying very little publicly. Other clubs do it differently and use the Melbourne media to make noise. Until a deal is done, we can't evaluate their negotiating skills.

                      Hi Syd. Welcome!

I agree with you. Our management team has let the narrative be completely dictated by the other teams and the media. As a supporter, it's really disheartening to hear of all these rumours about us selling the farm for a busted and then losing one of our stars with barely a whimper from us.

It is one thing to have faith in our management team but a reassuring comment that we're not going to be pushed around is not too much to ask?

I think we should wait and see how these trade negotiations go before judging Harley. We weren't exactly hard-nosed before he arrived. And my impression, based on the removal of Hanners and Gaz from our list last year, is that he is actually more ruthless than people think.

Guys like Dedoro and others become public celebrities for 10 days. What counts are the outcomes not the piss and wind that justifies journos' jobs. Let's wait and see.

Well we have no choice but to wait and see. I'm not pre judging anything but all I'm saying is some reassurance would be nice.

I know what everyone will say, but I'll still ask the questions.

*Should the Swans do the Papley deal without knowing we are trading in Daniher (i.e. independently of having an in principle agreement with the Dodo)?
                                *Will they?

Do we think the two are tied in the Swans minds or only in the minds of journos?
