If a club bids on a player who is genuinely the player they would most like at that pick - ie they think he's best available and/or best fits their list needs, I don't see that as "stupid niggling and general nastiness". The bidding system is intended to determine something approximately equal to "fair value" for draftees that clubs have priority access to. Clubs bidding on players where they think they should be valued is doing that.Comment

And yet Brisbane (if you believe the media) suggested a second round pick would be appropriate for Taylor. I hadn't realised he was out of contract when I initially read that. Even in contract, it would be an audacious request. For an out of contract, out of favour, and limited upside player, it's downright rude.Comment

Listening to Barratt and Lloyd it did sound like their salary is being paid by EFC and/or JD's manager.
I found it telling that by the end of their 4 minute discussion about why the Swans HAD to give in to Dodoro, they'd talked themselves out of it, pointing out that Essendon hadn't been able to get him on the park for 2 years, and that they hadn't achieved any success (won a final) in his 7 years at the club, which somewhat negates the "irreplaceable" and key to the success nature of Essendon.
FWIW given they don't want draft picks, I'd give them McCartin and a second rounder for Daniher.
I'm intrigued to see how the Hill trade plays out today after the Saints called Freo's bluff.
Don't even think of it,Swans...don't even think of it.
And, of course, it's still only Melbourne media potboiling, after all.Comment

Very frustrating trade period with the constant threat that we’ll pay too much for JD. Not really fussed if we get him or don’t. 9&25 seems like a lot to give up when he’s not filling an obvious need on our list.
The pick for Cameron seems about right and probably communicates we’re not on the market for any of their fringe players.
Less bullish about Papley than I was, still thinking he’ll stay though. Doesn’t seem like he’s thrown the toys out of the cot for a move.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

We need points for next year academy, so why not ask for a pick next year.
Yet again our traders have proven that they are not up to the task.doof-doofComment

You're most probably right Barry. But I think the Pies are looking at him more in the forward / ruck role. His path to that position at the swans is blocked and strange as it sounds, may get more opportunity at the pies. Having watched him in the NEAFL over the last few years, he can take a mark and is an excellent set shot.Comment

We didn't get a future pick, but Cameron and a fourth-round pick for a third-round pick was on the money."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment
