My query on Hewett is his ceiling. Has he got the ability to grab hold of a game?

According to Champion Data most improved Swans are: Fox, Clarke, Mills in that order.

If - and it's an if - we have to let a decent player go to get good picks to cover Campbell and Gulden, then George seems the pea to me.

Not because I don't rate him. I do. He'd be a coaches dream, he's tough as, he's a better kick than given credit for, and plays as hard on defence as offense.

But, we don't have KPPs to spare, and between Parker, Heeney, Rowbottom, Mills if we ever choose, and some of the other younger players coming through, we do have some good centre square players. (I haven't included JPK as he's only got a year or two left probably).

I know you can probably never have enough, but if we have to give something, he is an option. My only queries would be: does it widen the age gap we've already got between the older crew and the young ones coming through too much, and can we get a pick in the late 20s/early 30s for him. I suspect anything later than that would make it questionable.

I think he's solid, consistent rather than a game-changer. And not quick. But he may also be a victim of the Swans midfield hierarchy / pecking order. Who knows how he might have excelled if allowed to operate in a midfield missing JPK?

Just looking at it from the list management POV, these players coming into their prime (100 gamers) are the ones you don't want to lose. We've already lost Jones from this demographic. For a young side like the Swans, these are the experienced players that will lead the club into the finals. BTW, Hewett is on 99 games, so just needs one more for FS consideration.

Spot on He is a must keep , has sacrificed his game for the better of the team . I would like to see him unleashed to see what he can do . Also he has a mature body , all of our young midfield are pretty light on

I am a George fan but he is not the superstar midfielder that I hoped he would be when I used to watch him dominating in the NEAFL.

After a quick google stalk, I can reveal she isn't. Which I guess is positive for us - she won't be putting the pressure on George to leave.

In that case, he should stay. Rarely has a bad game, bigger mature body to support the youngsters, and can play a variety of roles in the team setup.

George is not from Adelaide either. Comes from Port Broughton in SA Mid North. One of the last players I would like to lose. We have already let Hanners, Mitchell, Nankervis, Rohan, Cameron and Jones go from that demographic and have replaced them with Thurlow, L Taylor, Gray and Brand. I don't think we are ahead in this trading.

I completely agree that Jones was a regrettable loss for us. I've been on the speed and skills thematic for several years and noted many times that we are heading in this direction. But that doesn't mean that Hewett is not a valuable player. I recall that the Swans' player consensus was that Hewett was our best shot for goal. He was very reliable early on when he played forward. Fast is better than slow, but not every player has to be a speed demon. I don't think having Pendlebury and Sidebottom in the same midfield hurt the Pies, to give but one example of a slow but very skillful duo. Hewett brings good skills and versatility. JPK is probably in his last couple of years, then Hewett will be second only to Parker in midfield experience. Both Hewett and Parker can rotate forward and make a strong contribution as goal kickers.

Anyway, Horse loves Hewett, so I don't think he's going unless he requests a trade.

he loves him because he knows whatever job he assigns to George he rarely lets him down. I get frustrated with him going backwards but we would be stupid to trade him away unless we were provided with an over the odds offer

All fair points for sure and totally understand where you are coming from.

I certainly don't want to turn this into Hewett bashing, but if he elected to go somewhere else then I think he is easily replaceable.

If he was fit at the moment, then I would be disappointed if he replaced say Rowbottom, Stephens or Florent in the middle. I think all will offer far more long term.

Rotating JPK and Parker forward is spot on and something we are going to have to do. I just don't think it's wise to have 3 type midfielders all rotating forward.
