what can we learn from a team that 'bounces' massively

chris fagan talking about going from 5 wins to 16 wins

i found it interesting listening to Fagans comments re the difference between 2018 season vs 2019

    - massive attitude change in the players ie the players came back 4 weeks early by themselves and were ready so early physically that they went into skills and game sim 4 weeks early

    - "the acquisition of the following players massively helped, very good AFL players, experienced and leaders"
    lachie neale
    lincoln mcCarthy
    marcus adams
    jarrod lyons

    - continued development of our emerging players
"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I feel a lot happier when you're encouraging us to emulate the Lions than Geelong or Hawthorn inourlistmanagement. The Lions have done a wonderful job of rebuilding, not least by their astute off field recruiting of Fagan and is it Noble (?). What you will notice is that they did it largely via the draft. Although they did go out and get Neale, and they were very fortunate to have Lyons fall in their lap.

A lot of good list management and recruitment has gone into their success, including their high draft picks like McCluggage and Rayner, with a bit of help from their Academy (Hipwood, Coleman) and locals like Harris Andrews.

Hats off to Dom Ambrogio, if he's responsible.

Interesting that Fagan nominated McCarthy and Adams. Both cheaply acquired. Adams hasn't even played many games for them. Goes to show the value of experience in a squad even if they are not your best on game day.

Brisbane lept into the finals last year in Lachie Neale's first year who played a big part. If we recruited similar quality midfielder would that make us top 8 bound in 2021 with our current list + Campbell/Gulden factor? With the unrest at EFC, Zach Merrett's name has been mentioned particularly as he was dropped from their Leadership group. Wonder if he's gettable & whether he'd provide us similar punch as Neale?

Pity we won't have any picks to draft him

I’m sure if we want to draft him we’ll have a plan. We have future picks as currency if we want to get back into the draft after pick 3, and the academy boys ( and to mitigate going into deficit). I don’t see why our future 2nd, 3rd and 4th would be off the table. This year should really be our last big crack at the draft for a while.

I thought Will Papley was more of a Rookie list spot, that might change because of the name

I hope we can somehow make it happen - I note he's taller than Tom, too.

I had similar thoughts. His brother was.

Two Papleys running around the forward line could be fun.

Drafting a brother of a well known player can be great for team cohesion but only if he is considered up to it. Brisbane drafted Jarrod Berry's brother, Tom, a couple of years back. As we all know, Jarrod Berry is a gun and one of the best young midfielders in the game. His brother spent the first season in the reserves and played a few games earlier this year. Who knows yet whether he can break into the strong Lions line-up on a more permanent basis? There are no guarantees that both end up being topliners.

Just to confirm these were Fagan's words ie he stated these 4 players and described them as above

5 to 16 wins...........does anyone know how often this happens ie 10 plus more wins than the prior season?

Just taking a guess one team every season or two?

not great odds and massively supported by some really high quality drafted pre 2019 and not having a star player worth $1.3m of the sal cap sidelined

I forgot to add that Fagan only expected 8 to 10 wins max in 2019 which was very interesting

Just out of interest........what is pick 3 worth if you dont use it as a draft pick?

ie I know most of us would use pick3 but lets just say you didnt ...........what type of player would you expect for pick3 if a trade could be arranged?

Would you bring in Jordan DeGoey if the trade was possible with pick 3 and or split in some way?

Is that the level of what you expect for a pick 3 .....a 24yr old and a dominant player?

Is there someone else that you would give up pick 3 for that is a maybe possible?

No to De Goey for me.

As it turns out, Lachie Neale was traded for the equivalent of pick 3 (6, 19, 55 for Neale & 30).
