Recruiting Denver Grainger-Barras would probably happen if (1) Thilthorpe and McDonald are both gone by our pick and we have decided we need to recruit the best available tall player, or (2) one of McDonald or Thilthorpe are available and we rate Grainger-Barras higher.

Giants did ok out of Cameron. Imagine they’ll try to move up with all the picks they have now.

          Essendon got 6, 7 and 8
          GWS 10, 13, 15, 20

Reckon they'll both be trying hard to get up the order

Geelong's first pick is now ... this if nothing else brings a huge smile to my face ... 51. Totally bent over by GWS

            I'm optimistic.
Got a Ruckman- Ive seen a couple very good games by Hickey - Tick
            Kept pick 3. - Tick
Moved picks to get more points for Academy players -Tick
Used AA to facilitate all above. (we have cover for his position) - Tick

I don't see the doom and gloom when i look at it all as a whole.

Giants also got 29 out of the Caldwell deal I believe ( and a future 2nd round ). Wouldn’t surprise me if they trade some of those for future picks if next years draft is as ‘super’ as suggested.

Add to that keeping our round 1 and round 2 picks intact for next year's draft.

Even if Essendon are the ones to bid on Campbell, I can't see them bidding on any player before the 3rd of their 3 picks, which will be #9 after JUH is matched. It would otherwise seem malicious.

whats to stop them on bidding with their first pick? I presume they would

Look at Witherden, Wright etc. Players outside the best 22 that were taking up salary cap and list space offloaded cheaply. I think AA was probably viewed as a fringe player in 2021 and it suited us to let him go. Whether that was the right call or not, time will tell, but losing him fixed up a lot of other problems.

Nothing. It's only that they could still get the same player at their 3rd pick, so if they made the bid with their 1st of 3 consecutive picks, it looks as it's only done to cause the matching club to lose more points. It would be done to inflict harm on the opposition without gaining potential access to a particular player. There's nothing improper about it, but not in the usual spirit of how these things happen.

Yes, it's interesting and exciting. I think if McDonald is there we take him; if not, I'm not sure. It certainly makes sense to recruit a tall, but Hollands is so dynamic.

If Essendon were to try this the AFL would be taking a close look at the draft rules to stop this from happening again. A fair rule change would be deeming the player to be bid on with the club's last consecutive pick.
