If I were managing an AFL list I don't think I'd ever draft an 18yo ruck other than in the rookie draft. I'd have a few on the go, maybe. And then I'd try and pick off under-utilised rucks from other clubs with second, third or fourth round picks as required, and depending on the circumstances.
It doesn't matter now. We got Ladhams and probably don't need to worry about drafting any other young ruck for a while.

The next big question is : Do we sign Paddy McCartin?

        Pleased that is over.
Not 100% convinced on Ladhams as a footballer at the moment but there is something there to work with and I feel much more comfortable with him as second ruck than Sinclair.
Disappointed with Dawson. And the Dawson Deal. And everything to do with Dawson. Sigh.

Doubtful. These things are usually reported in the media if there is a chance and there has been crickets regarding anyone signing Paddy this year!

In saying that I hope we do!

This reporting must have been off, unless it was *really* important to Port to have jumped the four spots, and the only way we'd facilitate it is to trade next year's third rounder.

Hopefully. Per instagram, Paddy's been having a pretty fun trip with Toms Papley and McCartin through NT (with Dylan Stephens) and Queensland.

If we ignore picks after the 2nd round the trades went: Dawson and drop of 4 places late in 1st round for Ladhams and late 2022 1 rounder. That's not bad at all.
I like the way you put that. Next year's third rounder mightn't have been a live pick for us anyway.

if Buddy’s name wasn’t Buddy, would we have chased him? Fact is he is Paddy McCartin and we might get him cheaply.

How about we sign McCartin and re-sign Reid and if we can coordinate their injuries have a tall defender all season

Absolutely! He's a former #1 draft pick and certainly can play. The only question mark is about the concussion risk. But he got through this year without a problem. He's definitely worth a shot.

McCartin was still with the Swans bubble in Vic until we got eliminated in the finals.. good indication of him and the clubs willingness to keep connected.
Ladhams trade is a steal. There's so much volatility with this draft, it's not a big change.

Plus, with Dawson going unexpectedly, we should have $200k surplus that allows us to restructure some agreements to free up future years salary caps a little.

Supposedly Ladhams tore up his back ended Port contract too, so we haven’t had you wear his $400k.

I don't agree we have near zero ruck depth. Sinclair, while not great, will always give a wholesome effort if called upon. Amartey hasn't done more than relief ruck so far, but he might be capable of more if needed. We could also give Reid another year.

The reality is that if we are going to contend next year, we need Hickey to play the majority of games. But we do have enough in reserve to pick the odd game here and there to give him a rest.
My post from 15 min ago was a reference to this one from last evening.

The Aliir trade was pick 35, it turns out. Still, effectively balance between the two trades.

Kudos to KB and team! Had every confidence in you- PL, welcome to the best club in the AFL- credit to you for choosing us and now show us we were right in choosing you.

I’m happy with this trade, and would still like to keep Sammy for a year!

I think picking up Ladhams on pretty reasonable terms stems the bleeding somewhat from this trade period. With further expected improvement in our young players and our new additions(Ladhams plus draftees) we will be fine. We have also kept all of our great Assistant Coaches giving us one of the best panels going. The latter should not be under-estimated.

Judging by the responses on twitter to Port’s ‘Thanks Pete’ tweet, not too many Port fans are happy about him leaving. Good sign.

WTAF, put up a player that just re-signed?!

Or, both Amartey and McLean could diversify their roles to differ from Ladhams, considering neither Joel nor Hayden are or will be first string ruckmen, and are thus not likely competing for the same position as Ladhams.
Now with Ladhams signed I can respond.

Assuming the starting tall forward line is Franklin, Ladhams and McDonald, how does McLean get a game?

Longmire may decide that two tall forwards are enough (Franklin, Ladhams)

Amarty would want a game and maybe even Sam Reid (don’t believe he’ll be on the list).

McLean needs some injuries to get a look in.

Might be best to get a draft pick in this scenario.

Just because you signed someone doesn’t mean you can’t trade them.
