Now with Ladhams signed I can respond.
Assuming the starting tall forward line is Franklin, Ladhams and McDonald, how does McLean get a game?
Longmire may decide that two tall forwards are enough (Franklin, Ladhams)
Amarty would want a game and maybe even Sam Reid (don’t believe he’ll be on the list).
McLean needs some injuries to get a look in.
Might be best to get a draft pick in this scenario.
Just because you signed someone doesn’t mean you can’t trade them.
The forward line next year will be stacked for talls, but come two years time, i suspect that the Bud will hang up his boots, Hickey will also be on the way out. That will leave McDonald to be the Big Dog in the forward line, flanked by McLean and Amartey. Ladhams will ruck. This seems pretty settled fr the next 5-6 years at least (if the McLean/McDonald and Amartey) come on.Comment

Very interesting read. Looks like KB has been watching him since 2016. He reminds me of Mummy, bit of a larrikin, rough around the edges but enough talent and determination to work with. Over to you Dean Cox.........Comment

So it's finally done, thank goodness for that.
Dawson, we got well unders but we didn't hold any cards, Cows were not trying to be fair, that we got another late first rounder next year is useful.
Hands up those that thought this time last year that Hickey could improve as much as he has under our coaching? That's not surprising, not a single hand has gone up! Ladhams has ability and he's mobile and there was not a ruck coach at Port this year. He also has some off field mates distracting him! We may be very surprised at how Ladhams improves with us.
A slide from 12 to 16 should be innocuous, pick 50'ish next year may not have been used anyway or burnt on an Academy player for which we can use even later picks with the discount. Ladhams for basically a four pick slide is a bargain.
16, 31, 39 - we've got targets for them all I'd reckon hence why 31 and 39 weren't in the trade. Next year, two firsts and a second is strong.
A painful but not unfruitful trade period IMOComment

Pay walled. But this article on Port's site mentions the Kinnear link. Interesting read.

I thought we should hire Mummy for a “special project” when we play the Crows. Maybe now we’ve got Ladhams he can take on that role?Comment

Rd 21 draft is what we should had after the 2020 season. Well actually better due to rd 2 picks not being pushed back.I'm okay with the Ladhams deal.
2021 Draft: Picks 16, 31 and 39
2022 Draft 2 first rounders + our second rounder
If we ignore picks after the 2nd round the trades went: Dawson and drop of 4 places late in 1st round for Ladhams and late 2022 1 rounder. That's not bad at all.Comment

Actually I’m not even a boo-er myself.
But excessive physicality can result in injury/suspension to our guys and that isn’t a good thing for the team. I just wish poor form for Dawson and his club for the duration of his career (actually, the end of time for the Crows).Comment

Hypothetically we might have offered him $1M over 3 years, probably an even $333K a year. He would rationalise that as the $400K he would have got next year at Port, plus $300K for years 2 and 3.
Which he’d be OK with if he knew he’d be hard pressed to get more than $300K a year from 2023 onwards if he stayed another year at Port.
I’m pretty content overall - it’s unders for Dawson but I’d prefer 2 first rounders in a more normal year where we know a lot more about the talent pool, and still gives us flexibility to use them in trades if we have the cap space (or even to move up the order next year).
I think there is some truth in the theory that guys like Dawson are better in good teams, and they aren’t real game-breakers or the type to pull you back into a game that’s slipping away. The real loss is the confidence and capability to hit the passes that open up the whole ground, which the average player won’t even try (eg. someone like Jake Lloyd will go the short chip or a long down the line).
With Ladhams I think there will be plenty of ‘I’m pleasantly surprised, I didn’t think he’d be this good’ posts next year and beyond.
Also happy to see the end of the highlight clips of all the trade targets - I’m sick of seeing how often we featured for guys like Lobb and Ceglar who played their only decent game of the last few years against us.Last edited by Steve; 13 October 2021, 08:33 PM.Comment

If he had a different name and showed the same attributes in his short career.....probably but the fact his brother is with us does sweeten the deal a bit.Comment
