While recruiting Warner's brother and Micky O's nephew are appealing from a nostalgia oerspective, we should only go for them if we are confident that they represent good value at the draft pick where they're available, and if our recruiters are confident they possess the attributes to make it as league footballers. We don't have the luxury of gifting list spots based on name alone.
Some will say recruiting Chad's brother will help us to keep him in the future, but we mainly need to trust our system and Club as the draws for him to stay. There are numerous examples of brothers drafted to different clubs who successfully played their careers out at their respective Clubs - the McVeighs come to mind!Comment

He was that night! His finishing and touch were exemplary. Seems to have suffered a crisis of confidence, but the skills are there however dormant.Comment

That game against the Dawks was unbelievable. I remember Bruce McAvaney asking “where did this kid come from?”
Sadly, he has never ever got anywhere near that form, so it must be due to the injuries he’s had. I think his kicking is still a major weakness but he must be showing something to be given another year. I guess the club wants to give all our players a fair opportunity, which is commendable and shows we’re more than just a business.
Now it’s Clarke and Bell- I imagine 1 year extensions too if we can fit them in. Clearly mainly for VFL, but a bit of cover with Clarke, as at least he can get the pill and can tag a bit if needed.
I'd move Taylor on if he didn't have a contract.

We're talking about depth players here. We probably have 4 or 5 players that we could bring in before we went this deep. Delisting only helps the salary cap (for the uncontracted players). There's not much benefit in delisting someone like Clarke to have another rookie pick. With such a young squad, it's going to be hard enough to create AFL playing time for some that really need it for development. There's only so many players worth adding to the list when it's hard to see spots opening up any time soon. Anyway, in a pinch, Clarke and Taylor are more than good enough to play senior footy.Comment

As it stands, we are 5 down on our list from last year. Going into the draft, we have picks 16, 31, 39, 70, 88.
With the de-listings of Carruthers and Ling, as well as the losses of Dawson and Hewett (both who spent time rebounding our of defence), Josh Sinn would be an excellent get with 16. If we really rated him, we could try and trade up by packaging 16 and 39 for example. If Sinn is already taken then JVR is an obvious option but only if he is the best available player overall. We still have a need for a midfielder or rebounding back given our losses.
In the 30's, Rhett Bazzo would be an option for our KP defensive stocks. With the re-signings of Gould, O'Connor and Reid, as well as the possibility of PMac coming onboard, I think the use of a pick in the 30s would be about right for a tall defender.
I really like the look of Angus (Angry?) Anderson and his back story is great too. With his selection onto our list, it would strengthen our support in Northern NSW, just next door to the Sun's own backyard. We could match with 70 and 88 if he is bid on or take him as a rookie selection (Cat B?).
Finally, I'd like us to take someone as a lockdown defender. We have had two of the best in Crouch and Smooch and Harry had a great 2021. There's no one on our current list I can see to replace Harry if he is injured. Would rookie listing Ling be an option if he's over his chronic injuries? Or do our people just not rate him?Comment

Yes and his composure hasn't improved.
But, he was injured for two thirds of this season and a bunch of last season. So if they have a list spot available, I think it's reasonable to give him another year to see what he can do if he stays fit, with a full VFL season to build on.
Happy enough with what we’ve done. We’ve got lots of depth for next year.Comment

Unless we have a player around pick 16 we are really keen on I could see us trading out pick 16 and have three first rounders next year.
Brisbane are an ideal target with their F/S Ashcroft next year who is an early first rounder.
A swap of our pick 16 for their 2022 first rounder plus their 2021 pick 41 for our 2022 second rounder?
Main reason is that I can see us being very very active next trade periodComment
-
Logic would be that Brisbane won’t use their first rounder in 2022 and will need points. If we feel this draft is the lottery everyone says it is then why not have three picks in the 30s?Comment

I can see us seriously trading next year.
Can see us going hard for Darcy Moore who will see Sydney as an attractive destination for many reasons.
We’ll try and get him for nowt but may need to trade.
And we’re renowned for stalking big forwards. Would be tempted to go for Ben King with three first rounders as bait?
Imagine Darcy Moore and King in our spine for the next 8 years?Comment

I couldn't help but wondering this morning.....if as Tom Harley saids we offered Jordan Dawson a serious long term contract ie maybe $600k pa and we valued his role for the future......whata re we doing with that money now?
Is it in pre paying a couple other players ie loading up a few contracts?
Is it being kept as a bit of a war chest along with Buddy's $900k which will be available come 2023?
Or ?
Hewett and Dawsos contracts would be approx $1m pa combined?
Or have players like McInerny, Warmer, Errol and Campbo really got on the radar of AFL clubs and we have had to save a few dollars ready for their contracts to increase?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I think we need most of it to try and keep all of our young talent. There are some big names coming out of contract including Heeney. The one that I see as the biggest flight risk is McDonald so we need to sign him early on in 2022. That will probably mean he wins a good contract based on potential.Comment
-
We have a bucket of talent coming out of contract next year, from players currently on big contracts like Heeney and Lloyd to ones who will have a claim for a solid upgrade like JMac, to McDonald and Gulden. A good chunk of the Dawson/Hewett money will get used.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment
