I don't know if we are the only ones that realize how deep this post goes.

    Touché. Well done.

From a purely football perspective (putting aside the human side of things), the contributions of both Amartey and McLean this year should give the club confidence that we can cope without Reid. If we only had the one showing glimpses, it would be a greater risk. But the fact we have a pair of them showing they might be able to play the Reid role long term is comforting.
I agree with your analysis of where Reid stands in the greater scheme of things, but it still has to be settled, in principle, so we know what is left in the kitty. I was just using Reid as an example, but it could be any player. We need to know who's in, for how much and who's out, add up the numbers, and see if it works. So any single pending issue can keep a lot of pending deals from being finalized.

Except that the club has a hard-nosed option of not offering Reid another contract. Again, that removes the human element, because I doubt Reid is thinking of retiring and is settled in Sydney. But purely from the club's perspective, I think they should be making Parker and Dawson comfortable with what's on offer and then seeing if there's anything left in the kitty for Reid (and also securing McLean before Reid).

Probably need Liz and Ludwig’s advice on this question.

Is this thread a place where you can throw out creative thought bubbles to solve list management perceived challenges?

Or should one operate in a totally factual manner taking only cues from what the Swans and the individual players managers says?

I guess in a perverse way, reporters like Damien Barrett are doing their job brilliantly. They provide provocative, untrue comments and rumours and football fanatics like us listen to it in droves. The high ratings he receives for his TV and radio gigs drive up advertising revenues. Great for business. The more controversial the statement, the better. Of course, there is no accountability or reckoning if you are later proven to be wrong. Another media commentator playing this game brilliantly is Kane Cornes. Its no coincidence that he is now prominent on various news platforms including Channel 9 and SEN radio.

I genuinely mean this as a complement: you are a very peculiar mix of radical individual thinking, and solicitude and deference.

We are on the same page regarding priorities. I was just remarking that the club usually likes to see the final picture before committing to any one part of it. It makes more sense to know what will happen to Reid before settling on Dawson and Parker, rather than doing the Dawson and Parker contracts and seeing what's left over.

If we've already decided not to offer Reid another contract, then he's out of the picture, and not part of the calculations.

But I suspect what the Swans are going through at the moment is a recognition with the tightened cap going forward, every dollar counts - so if they can squeeze $80,000 over four years off a few contracts, for example, that adds up to an extra player kept over the medium term.

The negotiations are probably going something like:

Swans: we will give you $755,000 for three years - and either backing themselves when that expires to sign him on a reduced contract, or including a trigger for a fourth at $500K.
Parker: four years at $700,000 will do fine thanks.

I've said before, I reckon the biggest influence on our cap will be what happens with Heeney. He's currently in the vicinity of $900K. When he's up next year, even he will probably accept that was overs. But does he accept a cut to $700K, or demand something halfway in between. $100K either way each year for a few years is again, another player staying or going.
The list coming out of contract at the end of next year is scary , think a few will have to go ie Reid and Hewitt to have any chance of keeping the bulk of these next year

                      Heeney
                      Lloyd
                      Campbell
                      Gulden
                      McDonald
                      Cunningham
                      Rampe
                      Mcinerney
                      Franklin

The young guns are going to demand decent pay rises and will have clubs willing to poach them with the offer of $$
If Mcinerney’s rise continues at this rate he will be highly sort after
                      Interesting times ahead

Not really a scary list, size of the salary cap will hopefully go back up and there'll be more players to cut/retire next year than this year. 2022 will be our trickiest in terms of salary cap

Heeney, already at maximum rate, local won't be going anywhere

Lloyd, heart and soul player, doubt he's in demand elsewhere, gets maximum likely remuneration here

Campbell, local won't be going anywhere

Gulden, local won't be going anywhere

McDonald, let's see what happens in 2022

Cunningham, heart and soul player, doubt he's in demand elsewhere, gets maximum likely remuneration here
Rampe, close to retiring/modest one year deal

                        McInerney, this will be interesting

Franklin, retiring or modest one year deal as he pushes to the 1100 goal mark

                        There, not scary at all

Still doesn’t stop the likes of North offering the godfather deals like they did to Heeney and Mills . The NSW boys most likely will stay but at inflated prices to what the swans would be hoping for

If you're in flag contention, players stay for less than they can get at bottom four rebuilders. Norf and Crows still some time off rising up the ladder other than jumping above the Pies!
